Tutoring Session Plan Course: MAT 21CTutoring Session Topic: First-Order Partial DerivativeTutoring Session Goal: By the end of the session, the tutee will understand the concept of partial derivative and will be able to apply various rules of differentiation to find the first-order partial derivative for a function. Agenda Setting Gauging Question: How have you learned partial derivatives in class, and how do you find a first-order partial derivative of a function? An Extra Resource: Math LibreTextsAATC Math specialist Grant’s website with practice problemsPractice Problem:Find all the 1storder partial derivatives of the following function:This problem is derived from Thomas’s Calculus Early Transcendentals Fourth Edition Chapter 14. Exercise question 15. To find the partial derivative, we first choose one variable to derive on and leave the other variable as a constant. For example, first we see y as a constant and derive R with respect to x. So the first term becomes 1/(y^2 +1) * 2x, and the second term becomes y^2 * (-( x^2 +y))^(-2) * 2x. We need to apply chain rule and power rule here. Then, we see x as a constant and derive R with respect to y. So the first term becomes x^2 * (- (y^2 +1)^(-2))* 2y, as we apply the power rule and the chain rule. The second term becomes (2y/(x^2 +y) - y^2 * 1)/ (x^2 +y)^2. We need to apply the quotient rule here. Hence, the answer to this problem would be:
Guiding Questions:“What do you notice about this function? What derivative rule would you like to use?”“Do you remember the quotient rule?”“How could we break this function down into segments and apply the steps for finding partial derivative?”Tutoring Course Concept Question (paste the question you chose from the list; note that the list of questions changes each time):What’s one new strategy or technique that you learned from the tutor panel/conversations that is not something you already do in tutoring? Describe the strategy/technique and explain how you would apply it to this session plan in particular.Response to the Tutoring Course Concept Question:Something I learned from the tutor panel/conversation that sometimes the tutee came into the session and expected us to do the teaching, instead of going to lectures and learning the material. I’ve encountered this situation before but I usually just did the teaching. I learned from the head subject tutor that instead of doing the teaching, we can encourage the tutee to use the resources, such as the lecture slides and textbook and try to learn the concept before the session or during session and come up with questions so that I as a tutor can answer them. I can also use the practice problems to help the tutee better grasp the concept. In this session plan, if the tutee told me they did not go to lecture and did not know the concept at all, I would let them pull up their lecture material and see if they can read and understand vaguely what the concept of partial derivative is. I would also ask questions to guide them to make the connection between derivative and partial derivative. That way, the tutee can be more engaged instead of passively receiving information if I just lecture them. I would also encourage the tutee to go to lectures and come with questions in our next session rather than waiting me to teach them. Specific Next Step:
For a next step, I would recommend going to office hours to see if the TA has additional practice problems to practice finding first-order partial derivatives or if they can review their homework for this week.
