1. Biography of Carmen Miranda Carmen Miranda was born in Portugal in 1909 and her family moved to Brazil when she was very young and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. She began performing as a teenager in local nightclubs in the 1920s to support her family. By the 1930s, her popularity had begun to rise in Brazil and spread to other Latin American countries.
