When reading through the skills required for each level of competency for leadership, management, and administration in the CACUSS Student Affairs and Services Competency Model (Fernandez et al., 2017) I considered how competent I felt I am at each skill based on my previous experiences, actions, and mindset to determine some of strengths and areas for improvement (see appendix A). Further, I believe that I am adequately intermediate at this competency based on my self-assessment (see appendix B).
Strengths
The skills that are my strengths tended to be related to my stronger competencies like communication, emotional and interpersonal intelligence, and student support. For example, a strength that I have developed through my work experience

Therefore, developing my proficiency in these areas would help develop my leadership, management, and administration competency. Completing this program is a great way to develop in these areas because I am finding it really enlightening to engage with the perspectives from my peers and learn from their experiences that they share in discussions. Most of my classmates are further in their careers than myself, so their contributions allow me to consider higher education and leadership in a way that is different than what I am familiar with because I do not have much experience in roles where divisional strategy, organizational structures, or other “big picture thinking” items are …show more content…
Although I have gained a lot of experience and developed my skills through my current positions at McMaster and Laurier, I would be interested in a role where I have more positional power, like legitimate power, because in my low-level positions as assistants to others I am currently limited by hierarchy and the scope and responsibilities of my roles in the ways that I can grow and further support students. I started in my role as an administrative assistant at McMaster four years ago and I feel that my professional growth has stagnated because the scope of our office is self-contained and does not grant me the opportunity to branch out much
I love to read and learn, I love to read self-improvement books, and books about science. I am drawn to lists that have suggestions, tips, exercises, and suggestions on whatever topic I am interested in at the moment or need to learn about. This strength can help me succeed at GCU because I tend to enjoy talking to my classmates and professors about ideas, theories, and concepts to gather the latest thinking. I love to gather information, I will often delve more deeply into subjects that intrigue me the most people. This could be a positive when I have big projects or research papers.
My greatest academic strengths include critical thinking, critical reading, creativity, listening skills, and perseverance. I’ve gained these strengths by challenging myself academically. My greatest academic weaknesses include a short attention span, cramming, and not being a good test
These courses have enabled me to significantly improve my change management skills to be a more effective leader and foster organizational planning, program development and execution. One of my strengths is in creativity. I am person who excels greatly when I am able to be creative and have freedom to think outside the box. However, that can also become a weakness because for assignments that are more limited and structured I to find to be challenging. Another strength I have is being able to learn quickly from my previous mistakes. There are times where I mess up or do something wrong, but my plan is to put those failures to good use.
After knowing what my weaknesses are, I usually try to solve them and improve my skills. For example, I’m not a highly flexible and positive person, so I seek out to individuals who are flexible and positive in their lives and ask for their advice. Another strength that I have is that I usually have a positive outlook of my improvement, because I have seen examples of those who overcome their hardships and become successful in life, so I believe that if I try hard enough, I will be able to overcome my weaknesses. I’m also confident with my listening skills and my ability to focus on others and make them feel heard. I like to start on works and projects early so that if anything comes up, I will still have time to handle it.
I have become more determined which is one of my strengths. What I have done to stay more focused is make a list of my priorities that I need to stay on task with. It makes me feel better about myself when I check things off my list. I have been also persistent which is another strength that will help me succeed and will help me become a better
1. Using the AAA Leaders’ Competency Model (attached in the e-mail), identify one (1) strength and one (1) area of development for you. I was not at all surprised that my number one strength is winning others over because I love people. I love being around people whether they are strangers or friends and enjoy making conversation. In clinical, I am always excited to meet and talk to new people. Helping classmates with their patients is exciting to me because I am able to meet and talk to even more people throughout the day. I was surprised that one of my strengths was positivity.

The demand for effective and competent employees continuously increases. As a result, job competencies become an integral part for quality service that covers the knowledge, skills, abilities, traits and behaviors that allow an individual to perform a task within a specific function or job (Shippman, et.al, 2014). In determining the impact of the quality of work that people do, a competency model is needed to organize a collection of observable skills, behaviors, and attitudes (“Competency Models - What Are They Anyhow and What’s the Big Deal? - St. Charles Consulting Group,” n.d. 2015). Strengths: As a student one of my strengths is organization. I can say I can keep my school materials and notebooks organized in a way that I and others can comprehend. The reason I can say I am organized is because, I have hardly ever had in the past or present any issues with trying to find homework or assignments because I always kept my materials for each class organized and in a place I could easily find. Another strength I have is social skills. I can believe that I communicate with others well in a group.
