The Greeks took a huge step into entertainment. This step is still felt today. The whole reason we have olympics is because of the Greeks. There is way more to this story. The Greek theatre plays a huge role in our modern theatre. The ancient Greek Olympics, sports, and theatre all influenced our modern day entertainment. The Greek Olympics started back in 776 B.C. Messengers were sent out every year to tell the nearby cities about the games. The message would spread until it was time to start the games. There was no torch to start the games. That is a modern tradition. “The idea of the Olympic torch or Olympic Flame was first inaugurated in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. There was no torch relay in the ancient Olympic Games” (“The Games”). The olympics were held in Zeus 's honor every four years. They were always held in Olympia because Olympia was one of the oldest religious center in the Greek world. Only Greek males could compete and watch. The Greeks started with only drama. Some plays in this genre were called Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Drama led to Comedy, and drama and comedy is the mix we use today. Some say that drama came from poetry, but others say that it came from the festivals for Dionysus like when they sacrifice the goats. Either of these theories could be true. The ancient Greek theatre really influenced our theatre today. The ancient Greek games, sports, and theatre all influenced modern day. The games came back to the modern world eventually, and some of the traditions that they started survived. For example, the Olympics are still held every four years. There is still foot races, (now called track) the javelin throw, discus, and long jumping. In theatre, the Greeks gave us the genre we use today, a mix of drama and comedy.
