Audrey Nunez 21 July 2015 Psychology 2301 Dr. Alvarado Chapter 1 1. What is psychology? Psychology is not only the study of behavior and of the mind. It is also the scientific study of the brain and of why we do certain things. 2. Correlation: correlation is the connection between two things. There is positive and negative correlation. It is important to remember that correlation is not always causation. Just because two things have, a connection does not mean one causes the other. 3. Naturalistic Research: is watching subjects in their natural habitat. There are some reasons where naturalistic research would not work so well. With naturalistic research, you can only observe the behavior but not the mental processes. In addition, you have to have consent of the subject. People tend to act differently when they …show more content…
The main goals of psychology: Description, Explanation, Prediction, Change. The first goal of psychology is to describe the problem or issue. Next to explain the issue. It must first be understood. After explanation is Prediction, which usually involves an educated guess of, how the experiment will end. (hypothesis) the last goal is to improve the problem with what was learned in the experiment. Chapter 2 1. Neurons: Neurons communicate to other neurons through the use of neurotransmitters across the synapse. The three parts of a neuron are dendrites, cell body, and axon. 2. Parts of the brain and their functions: the frontal brain with controls the higher mental processes. The midbrain, which controls emotions, motivations and the limbic system. The hindbrain which controls movement, and lower mental functions. 3. Split brain: when the corpus callosum is split it destroys the connection between the left and right side of the brain. The right side deals with face recognition, while the left side deals with perception. 4. The endocrine system: while neurons use neurotransmitters to carry messages the endocrine system uses hormones to carry
Understanding the theoretical perspectives of psychology will enable you to have a better understanding of people you interact with. I decided to choose the character SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob is from a kids television show. When I think about SpongeBob, it brings me good childhood memories. He is much like me when it comes to his bubbly and carefree personality.
Through extensive research within the field of neurolinguistics, scientist and linguists have discovered how the brain works, and how this can be stimulated through an essential element, such as social interaction, in order to develop the intricate system of verbal communication. This essay is intended to discuss the role of the human brain in the development of language as well as the connection with a critical period for its acquisition taking into consideration the case study of Genie Willey, the feral child. To start with, it is paramount to understand how the brain divides its functions, which at the same time corresponds to the physical division of the organ itself. Being divided into two hemispheres and connected by the corpus callosum, each hemisphere is specialized in the performance of specific functions.
The article “Psychiatric Disorders and Functional Disability in Outpatients with Traumatic Brain Injuries” published by the American Journal of Psychiatry studies people who have gone through brain trauma surgery. The main objective of the study is to see what disorders and disabilities come along through the recovery process. After evaluating fifty outpatient brain trauma surgery survivors the results came back and were shocking. “Thirteen (26%) of the patients had current major depression, and an additional 14 (28%) reported a first-onset major depressive episode after the injury that had resolved.
Psychologists, just like social workers, are in the helping profession, and both offer their clients counseling services on closely related problems. However, despite the functional similarities between social workers and psychologists, there are inherent differences in their areas of focus and the level of training undergone. This paper seeks to compare psychology to social work, and it will explore the target individuals of either profession, aspects of human functioning that each focus on, human problems addressed by each profession and the areas of overlap between the two. The origins of psychology can be traced back to the sixteenth century, and the name was derived from the Greek words “Psyche”, which means “soul” and “Logos”, which means “knowledge”. Therefore, the original definition of psychology was “a study of the soul”.
Psychology Collage Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. Psychologists seek answers to questions like why siblings are so alike in many different ways and why one individual might act differently than another individual. Psychologists study everything that has to do with the human mind. They study people’s different emotions and what makes them so different from everyone else. I chose the picture with the red umbrella among the black ones because I think it portrays difference.
The human brain is the “command” system of our nervous system, which means it is one important pink thing inside your skull. The way our body and all of our nerves are set up, the brain consists of about 86 billion and more nerves which are connected to tons of synapses that allow us with our everyday thoughts, the emotions we feel, and the movement in our body. Speaking on the importance of the brain, it is also important on how bad it can get if there were any damage to it. Traumatic Brain Injury (otherwise known as craniocerebral trauma) is injury to the brain which results to demolition of some of the brain cells, the neurons, and parts of the brain. Most TBI’s arise from sports or accidents and occur mostly in males.
The communication among neurons is quick and detailed and the other endocrine system is the slower but it is more widespread and the endocrine systems communication with the body and the behavior has long lasting effects. The biological approach also approaches the gender effects as a cause for human behavior. Psychologist Doreen Kimura and Elizabeth Hampton (1994) report is evidence where biological approach has explain human behavior with the of the gender factor. The experiments done by the above psychologists sated that the performance of women and men are different to levels of hormones, they have in their body.
Known as the “little brain”, the cerebellum is a very important part of the brain and the human life. Not only does the cerebellum regulate and control motor movement, but it also is vital to learning motor behaviors. Balance, walking, the movements of speech, and fine motor skills are just a few of the necessities to human life the cerebellum controls. The cerebellum is located behind the pons and the upper part of the brain stem, and it sits right below the main part of the brain. The cerebellum is nicknamed the “little brain” for its appearance.
This week when reviewing chapter one Psychology, Ch. 1 I learned a ton of useful information. I'll be honest when I read the word Psychology I got super nervous because the word seams supper intermating and challenging. Review this chapter renewed my confidence I am now super eager to continue this course and soak up as much information as possible.
The brain is split into three main parts; the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The forebrain (front) is the most biggest but complex part. The forebrain controls body movement. The midbrain is the middle of the two regions.
Have you ever wondered why you react to a certain situation, like how you jump when cold water is being poured down your back . How you react is an example of what the nervous system does for you. So what is the nervous system? The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons that transmit signals between different parts of the body. The nervous system is responsible for controlling how your body acts and what it does, such as talking, walking, breathing, learning, and swallow.
Life energy flows from the highest levels of the subconscious mind and permeates our consciousness to the degree that we are able to receive it. Negative attitudes such as fear, grief, anger, insecurity, ill health, and so on inhibit and restrict this vital force of the subconscious and are the factors that dim and finally darken the flame of life. You will see how this life force, or buried attention, can be uncovered, restored, and again be put to use when you recognize the symptoms! You will see why this inner man is not a mystical concept or philosophical probability; there is such a force! It is real, it does exist, and you are its master!
1. How would you define psychology? When divorced psychology out as a science? • The psychology has evolved from being "the doctrine of the soul" to become "the study of consciousness, perception and behavior." Psychology is a science that is about understanding the human psyche and behavior, and that simultaneously explains why the human experience, feel, think and act as they do.
Psychology is the study of the mind and it is also the study of the human behavior. Psychology teaches a person to understand unconscious thoughts a person thinks. It also allows someone to view the world around them in a different way than they used to before. With the basic understandings of psychology, people will be able to understand one another more easily. Also people will know how and why people think a certain way in certain situation.
The purpose of this assignment is to look at two perspectives in which human behaviour is studied, examined and explained and to provide a contrast between the chosen perspectives. Introduction Psychology is a science. The purpose of psychology is to answer questions about how we think, how we feel, and how we behave and also why we think, feel and behave the way we do.
