Osh, a character from Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk, would be the best partner on a deserted island because he is a strong caregiver, quick thinking, and resourceful. Osh has proved to be a strong caregiver, which makes him a worthy partner to be stranded on an island with. At this point in the story, Osh is talking to Crow about the challenges of raising her. He didn’t want Crow to be taken away from him so he would go above and beyond to keep her protected and content. Lauren Wolk states, “‘When you first came here, I didn’t think I’d get to keep you’ he said. ‘If people hadn’t been so afraid that you were from Penikese, they would have taken you away for sure.’ I tried to picture that: Osh bolting the door. At this point in the story, it is explained how Osh came from a terrible background but still managed to make the smart and split decisions for how to give Crow the best life possible. Wolk’s words are, “He lived in a place that was so difficult even for a grown man, but he took me first before deciding what else to do with me. And I stayed” (Wolk, 11). This proves that even with everything going on in Osh’s life, he made the wise decision to raise Crow. Not only was it the right choice, but he also made the decision quickly to make the best for Crow. This will help on the island because he will make smart choices for what to do when it comes to things needed for survival. If things were starting to get bad, Osh would know how to fix them without hesitation. Some could say Crow is better at thinking through decisions and listing all possible things wrong with what could happen. This is true, but Osh still makes intelligent decisions without needing to take time by overthinking. For instance, he made the difficult decision about Crow’s life without needing to think about both sides of the story. If Crow hadn’t been taken and raised by Osh, her life could have been extremely worse. With all things considered, Osh is a very quick and intelligent person which helps majorly while being
