Violence can completely change people’s lives During 1965 the caste people were viewed only as thieves and worthless people. Similarly immigrants were treated the same way and often were violated against their skin color and ethical background. It was very unusual for a caste person and immigrants to be accepted into the society. Craig Silvey shows this in the novel Jasper Jones a lot of families were broken down due to violence and their prejudice coming from their within the family or outside. In life discrimination and prejudice in the society can lead to violence, and violence can change a person and a family forever. The prejudice against castle people in Corrigan lead Jack Lionel to discriminate against his son’s marriage and therefore ruining the relationship between them and their family. Each one of the Lu family members is treated badly from the Corrigan citizens. Not only are they going through a lot in Corrigan but they are going through a lot at home because of the war and their family members back in Vietnam. The violence they face is not a serious issue to Corrigan police and people. Jeffrey is constantly bullied by the people he plays cricket with and called “Cong” (62). An Lu’s garden was ruined and his whole hard work and still gets verbally abused “‘Jesus Christ, you’re all sitting on your hands. He’s involved. He’s red. He’s red! He’s a red! fucking! rat!’ He leans forward and spits those words at An Lu” (211). The violence the Lu family faces makes them in an uncomfortable, trapped and not safe position as they are living in a toxic environment but cannot go back
