The Second Great Awakening, beginning in about 1790, influenced a reform movement that encouraged mandatory, free, public education. In 1805, the New York Public School Society was created by wealthy businessmen and was intended to provide education for poor children. In 1817, a town meeting in Boston, Massachusetts called for establishment of free public primary schools. Many wage earners opposed this proposal. It was called The Common School Period because education transformed from a completely private, costly thing to a luxury that was available to the common masses. With public education, social class separation was not as extreme as it had been in the past, but still continued to occur in some areas. The people in the lower classes originally gained minimal instruction, such as learning how to read and write, calculate, and receive religious instruction, while the upper classes were more entitled to pursuing a higher education in secondary schools and even continue their schooling at the university level. Though some social class separation still lingered, education was made mostly to fit common standards. In 1837, Horace Mann, one of the great education reformers, created grade levels, common standards to reach those said grade levels, and mandatory attendance. McGuffey readers, authored by William Holmes McGuffey, were used as textbooks. The public schools’ content, discipline, and amount of religiosity differed due to the early influences, general demographics, and the three sections. All states in America had free public schools by 1870, but attendance was not completely mandatory. Into the twentieth century, as it became a known fact that the more educated a person was, the more productive they could be, laws were established that required all foreigners to be americanized so that American education was able to expand and be unified as one
Massachusetts reformer Horace Mann led the charge for the country's first statewide public school. Mann wrote that education “is the great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance-wheel of the social machinery.” He also said that universal education would allow the United States to maintain a democracy of all Americans, he thought, “must, if citizens of a Republic, understand something of the true nature and functions of the government under which they live.” The public school system became a reality and they were free too. Most young citizens can now go to school poverty free.
The Central Ideas of the First Great Awakening The colonial American society witnessed innumerable revolutions and renewals during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The revolutions had different thematic focuses including protests against slavery and racial segregation among others. One of such revolutions was the Great Awakening, which involved the spiritual revival that swept the colonial American communities. Along with changes within society, education experienced great changes as well. When World War I started, there was only about one million kids attending a high school. However, this number soared to over four million by 1926. With industry booming and the economy prospering, there was a need for higher skilled laborers. This is exactly what high schools became in the 1920’s, as they offered a big range of various courses for students who were interested in industrial jobs.
The New England colonies were known to have the highest literacy rate. Known Nothing Party: The American Party, also known as the Know-Nothing Party, was a prominent United States political party during the late 1840s and the early 1850s.
One problem still stood and that was that many children did not have any access to education. A Massachusetts lawyer by the name of Horace Mann, led movements to try to create new common schools for all children. Mann believed that available public education for children of every social class would revive social equality and give them an equal chance to excel in social mobility. These schools would also keep society in order by disciplining children and building their individual character and teaching them to obey authority. “Independence, free will, and personal effort are considered primary virtues that contribute not only to personal achievement but also to the success and well-being of the nation.” This quote, stated by Charles Finney, means that people must be able to choose for themselves and make their own decisions in order for the country to become better than it is. The Enlightenment began with the English philosopher John Locke. It was an era of spreading faith in reason, in reason, and in universal rights and laws (The Enlightenment in Europe). The ideas that were embodied by Enlightenment were life, liberty, and property. It also led to the idea of natural right. The Enlightenment influenced the way people finally realized that divine right wasn’t right and start to doubt it.
Through the education, prison, and Temperance movements, the Antebellum time period prior to the Civil War introduced many democratic ideals that we now hold dear, ranging from public education to fair mental healthcare. Horace Mann, the leader of the education reforms, sought to provide public education to all citizens, as his state of Massachusetts was heavily focused on enhancing education, according to Document #3. Since before the United States became its own independent nation, Puritan beliefs included an emphasis on education, a clear precursor to this time period. From the implementation of schools with the Old Deluder Act, to the current education reform, the education system was in need of a reform in order to be made available to all — Mann’s main point he was trying to convey. As with the Temperance Movement, the banning of alcohol sparked wild controversy.
Three primary periods of growth and expansion of education exist: expansion westerly in the USA prior to the Civil War; the building of the train systems; and the land grants to universities. In the late 1700s a constitutional amendment (10th) was passed: powers not addressed in the constitution would fall to the states or the people, since public education was not listed as a federal power. States, assumed the responsibility to oversee and regulate public education.
