The foods we eat all contain calories needed to sustain my everyday energy levels. As a moderately active student, my recommended average intake of calories is 2400 per day, whereas during the project my average daily intake was 1280 calories per day leaving me at a deficit of 1120 calories. …show more content…

Several other functions that it plays in the body include: balancing the electrolytes in our system, maintaining the acid-base balance and is significantly essential to muscle contraction and nerve transmissions throughout our body. A deficiency in sodium can put individuals at risk for contracting hyponatremia which is a dangerous condition in which an individual has too little sodium in their blood. The connection between sodium and water is directly correlated in keeping an equal ration of sodium and water in the body. For example, when the body contains too much salt, the body responds in keeping homeostasis by telling the individual to drink excessive water – polydipsia- until there is an equal balanced ratio of sodium to water. In addition, individuals who consume more than the recommended intake of salt tend to show signs of excessive weight gain, but in reality is just a side effect water weight in the body for this its way of maintaining a balance ratio until the salts are expelled from the body. The DRI recommendation for sodium is 1,500 mg whereas the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is < 2300 mg. When comparing these recommended sodium intake to the average amount of sodium intake I had during the diet project part one, I was shocked to see that I ate an excess of 133 mg more than the set UL. During the project the foods that contributed to my …show more content…

All of our cells, organs and tissues depend on water to help regulate homeostasis. Homeostasis is when our cells seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability internally as it deals with environmental external changes. Because water plays many important roles in the overall maintenance of the body, some of the functions of it include: regulates body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, lubricates joints, helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients , and most importantly it also moistens tissues like the mouth, eyes and nose. Dehydration is when the body is deficient in water. Because the water in our bloodstream plays an important role in equally transporting cells and minerals throughout the body, when an individual is not getting enough water the cells in the body will begin to shrivel up and malfunction. The opposite of dehydration is water intoxication. In an occurrence of water intoxication, what happens is that an individual may consume too much water without giving the body the equal amount of nutrients to counterbalance the water consumed. The recommended intake of water is 64 oz. a day; in comparison to the amount of water I drank, I fell short by 22.4 oz. of water with an average intake of 41.6 oz. of water per day. Based from this project I realized that if I don’t drink enough water per day my body will have a hard time transporting minerals throughout my body and excreting all the toxins out of my
