Gentlemen of the Jury. You have come to the final judgement in this trial. You all know very well about the crime Tom Robinson has taken part in and you know very well of the distress and discomfort young Mayella has endured.
It has been a long day, I know you all must be tired from the exhausting job as a jury member, but I need your ears and mind to focus upon the justice we must enforce. You’ve all heard the facts and the stories. I am asking, as a man who wishes to enforce a safe environment for our families, for you to look inside yourself and see what is needed to be done and do the right thing by removing this hazard of a person from our society.
The defendant is guilty and we all know that. He took advantage of being invited inside Mayella Ewell's home where moments later he began to pummel helpless Mayella, and when she was down and defenseless, he raped her. This black man raped young, poor, helpless Mayella Ewell who could not defend herself against him. Luckily her father, Bob Ewell, arrived soon after some incidents had taken place otherwise I believe young Mayella here may still not have been with us. It gives me chills to think of the horrific act of the defendant. It gives me such

Who else would run away from a crime they did not commit? Some may say this is a trial of race, but it is not that simple. This trial is bringing a black man's crime into reality and we must not put a blind eye upon his actions. Tom Robinson took advantage of Mayella Ewell and I for one am not going to be a witness to the traumatising and unexplainable actions of Tom Robinson, but I will put forward my say towards what is for the good and safety of this community. Mr Robinson, if he even deserves to be formally announced, is guilty for his actions. He is guilty for this crime and guilty because he has the responsibility for Miss Ewell’s discomfort which will take her many years to be able to trust a man
Black men are six times as likely as white men to be incarcerated in federal prisons and local jails. This kind of injustice is the reason why cases like The Scottsboro Boys case, where nine boys were falsely accused of rape, exist. This is also why books like To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee are made. In both of these trials, they highlight the injustice of blacks during the 1930’s.
The jury system originated in England hundreds of years ago. The colonists brought the jury system from England to the United States. In 1733, John Zenger, a printer, printed a newspaper critical for the British Government. His attorney convinced the jury to be in favor for Zenger because his criticisms were true. After this trial, it gave ordinary citizens the freedom of speech and the power to go against the king.
He knew Mayella was lying just to protect her father. Mayella did not want her father to do anything worse to her, causing her to blame it on Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson, is guilty of assaulting a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Everyone in that court knew that they made the decision based on the color Tom’s skin
In the events of the trials, Mayella Ewell states that she was a victim to choking, beating, and rape. She accuses Tom Robinson of the crime, and eventually leaves the witness stand in hatred and
That is all your honor. The jury shall now leave to make their decision, I encourage the jury to think hard about their choice in order to decide the right choice for this man. “Jury leaves the
There are four witnesses to this event, Sheriff Heck Tate, Mayella’s father Robert Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and finally Tom Robinson. Mayella Ewell is worthy of compassion. Her home life is wistful and lonely with her siblings not usually in the house with her and her father allegedly abusing her. Mayella is worthy of compassion since she was physically and emotionally hurt. Mayella Ewell was abused physically and therefore worthy
This remarkable courthouse only hosted approximately seven trials in its first year and since then has dropped even lower (Dzur, 2013). The early 20th century was the last time a jury was considered the normal process for dealing with criminal cases, and now the plea deal is king (Dzur, 2013). Simple fact is, today juries hear only a very few cases across the nation (Dzur, 2013). High-ranking members working in the justice system fear that the competence of a jury today is declining with the scientific evidence that is now available (Dzur, 2013). The statistics seem to support this fear.
This is proven by the lack of medical evidence shown in this case, and Mr. Ewell making an excuse that he doesn’t have the money to take Mayella to the doctor, even though it’s his child and should care about her, like a normal father. Additionally, Atticus declares that “someone in this courtroom is guilty,” and this person is Bob Ewell because he put an innocent man on trial, when he was never involved, just to keep his (Bob Ewell) pride and the dignity he
Mayella feels guilty after lying under oath in court. Mayella lied about Tom Robinson raping her because she doesn't want her dad to beat her up if she tells the truth. PARTIES Members of the jury, the state will review the evidence against Mayella Ewell who let her greed influence her decision to lie under oath. While her father Bob Ewell forced her to lie about the case so he wouldn't be
A man sits upon the stand as he hopes for the jury to plead him not guilty. The American Jury System has been in the United States Judicial Branch for over 385 years. The basis of a bench trial is that there is only a Judge that decides whether the accused is guilty or not guilty. Whereas on a jury trial the fate of the accused is proposed to the jury and they would decide whether he is guilty or not guilty. The jury trials provide fairness, it represents citizenship, and there is less of a bias than that of a bench trial.
Despite these facts, and the fact that MayElla Ewell basically admitted to perjury, Tom Robinson was still convicted and later murdered brutally in the same way that Rodney King was beat brutally. Ultimately, black-white trials were a series of back and forth situations, he-said-she-said encounters, whose word is more valuable than the other paradoxes. And whether or not an African American individual being tried with a crime was actually guilty, if they were put up against a white person, their word would automatically be unavailing (or futile) in comparison. No matter what they said, they were still black and that was enough for most juries to
The American jury system has been around for centuries but all of a sudden, people are trying to change it. Hundreds of years ago in England, the first of the jury systems were adopted. When there was a crime, the accused was brought before a judge and jury (B.E.). The jury, a group of twelve white men, from the area the crime was committed, heard the case and all of the evidence (B.E.). Those 12 men, decided whether or not the person being accused was guilty or not.
Next, it is easy to tell that Mr. Bob Ewell and his daughter were more concerned about arresting Tom Robinson rather than the actual case. They were quick to point fingers, but they had trouble paying attention during the trial. When asked by Mr. Gilmer (the solicitor) if he was ambidextrous, Mr. Ewell responded by saying, “I most positively am not, I can use one hand good as the other.” Also, Mayella didn’t hesitate to accuse Tom of hitting her left eye even though Mr. Heck Tate clearly stated that her right eye was blackened. The two witnesses were ignorant and nervous throughout cross-examination.
”(Lee 238). As I interpret this quote I can see that more evidence is proving Mr. Ewell to be guilty of hitting his own daughter. Mr. Ewell is left handed and in the quote is says that Mayella was bruised on her right side, from this I can predict that Mr. Ewell abused his daughter and Tom Robinson is innocent. I can presume that Mr. Ewell abused his daughter because he said that he did not get her examined by a
People don’t like Tom because of the color of his skin. Classmates and others were not happy and teasing her because her father defends an African American person. (Lee, 110) Tom is convicted of raping Mayella, Bob Ewell’s daughter. After all the evidence presented, it was clear Tom was being
