Geography impacts society, cultures, the economy, politics, and the environment around the world. To dig deeper and know why geography affects a variety of things the definition of this world should be known. Geography is the study of where things are found on Earth’s surface and the reasons for their locations. It is studied everywhere from countries in Asia to cities in The United States, such as Houston, Texas.
Houston, Texas is a city of more than 2.3 million people. The city once known for its ‘old cowboy hat image’ is now an area full of diverse citizens from all over the world. metropolitan areas, with the greatest percentage of rich people living among the rich and the third greatest percentage of poor people among the poor”. The majority of the upper class are whites and Asians who have attended college, while the lower class is usually labor workers, such as Latinos. This has created not only an ethnic divide but also a class divide in the community. There are neighborhoods in the city that are run by drugs and crime, but there are also neighborhoods with nice houses and great schools. This leads to a main political problem…education. The Station Museum of Contemporary Art’s director once said, “‘The only time this city hits the news is when we have a hurricane!’”. The director was upset because some people still label Houston as a “cultural wasteland”, but the city has art exhibits that pop up all over, restaurants that host multiple different types of foods from all over the world, and American fashion fused with Vietnamese style. And that is only to name a few! The diversity of the city allows for cultural diversity as well and shows how much cities can develop in only a couple of
In the book Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America; By Harm de Blij I learned many things and my perspective about the world and what's going on it has changed after reading this book. After reading this I wished that I had payed more attention to what was going on in the world and now, I will work hard to keep being aware of the world so I am no longer ignorant of it. Harm De Blij points out many things and makes clearer for me. In Why Geography Matters, Harm de Blij exhibits how geography's viewpoints yield one of a kind bits of knowledge into the inter connections that stamp out onto our ever changing world. The book talks about three major problems.
Such descriptions as democrats or republicans divided into certain areas of El Paso compose the diversity over political beliefs, thus expanding a multicultural area by taking many other opinions into consideration. Education also divides people into certain groups, not segregating them, but rather classifying them into more groups that add up into more diverse and complex organizations. Education is a good factor when talking about diversity because it directly affects the citizens’ lives and relates to whom they are and what they do. Norms and values aggregate to the list of one of the many factors that cause cultural diversity in El Paso. Every known civilization has always relied on its norms and values to make progress because of a meticulous organization that keeps peace and union within the borders of each nation, state or city.
Inner cities are “distressed urban and suburban areas of concentrated poverty and low income. Inner city residents represent 45 million people, and of all U.S. residents living in poverty, 31 percent live in inner cities.” (Initiative…). Inner cities like Compton typically had a more diverse racial makeup, with communities comprising mostly African American, Latino, and Asian citizens. During the 1990s, the African American population of Compton took up just more than half of the city's residents (State…).
“Houston once again leads the nation in dining out, according to the Zagat Texas Survey, released Tuesday. Overall Texans eat out 20 percent more than residents of any other state an average of 3.8 times per week compared to 3.1 times per week nationally. But no city eats out more than Houston, whose residents patronize restaurants, an average of 4.1 times per week” (Rufca,
When observing the increasing presence and influence of minorities within Texas one can see how much of an impact these communities have had on the state of Texas by shaping it into a state filled with diversity, cultural roots, and innovation to grow the community. Texas has undergone a notable growth demographically in recent decades as minority communities including Hispanic/Latino, African American, and Asian populations have made Texas one of the most diverse states and the second largest growing state with a population of 30 million as of 2022 (Bureau, 2023). With the continuing growth of minority communities, their presence and impact have brought significant change to Texas’ social, economic, and political affairs. Texas can be seen

The culture and identity of our communities are what make up the community. There is no community without its own unique culture to set itself apart from others. In a book written by Manissa M. Maharawal about Tech-Colonialism, she discusses the problems that come with gentrification in the areas. The text shows, “The first tech boom of the 1990s and early 2000s saw thousands of Latinx families displaced as dot com companies and their employees moved in, causing a wave of cultural erasure in the Mission District neighborhood.” The Latino community in the bay was harshly affected by tech colonialism and the sudden increase in incoming residents.
