Did you know that Langston Hughes made his career from bussing tables at restaurant in Washington? Did you also know that William Shakespeare was also known as Bard of Avon ? These two men are famous early American poets. There work is still very popular today! Langston Hughes was born February 1st, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His father James Hughes and mother Carrie Langston separated shortly after he was born. Lanston was then raised by his maternal grandmother until she passed away during his teenage years. He then moved into the care of his mother. His mom moved frequently until they settled in Cleveland, Ohio. While he was in Mexico his first poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was published in the “The Crisis” magazine. He soon came back to the United States in 1921. When Hughes returned to the US he attended the Columbia University, and later dropped out in 1922. After Hughes decided to drop out he then started to working as a steward on a freighter and the ship took him to Africa and Spain. After his return in 1924 he moved to Paris and moved back to the United States months later. He began to live in Washington and worked at a local diner as a busser. He met poet Vachel Lindsay and showed her some of his work. She later got him promoted and won 1st prize in “Opportunity” magazine. Soon after he won 1st prize he earned a scholarship from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1929 and published his first novel. In 1940 he started to contribute to the column “Chicago Defender.” In late 1940’s he contributed lyrics to a broadway “Street Scene,” this allowed him to earn enough
