Although there is only one race among the people, we come from many different cultures from around the world. It is interesting to see all the unique things that come from these different cultures. One of my close friends of five years is Filipino, and I am constantly learning something new about her cultural backgrounds. Loren King is eighteen, from Princeton, West Virginia, and is currently attending WVU. Her father is half Filipino. Her mother was born and raised in the Philippines. Even though Loren grew up in Princeton, West Virginia, she still follows most of her cultural traditions and beliefs. There are two major languages in the Philippines, English and Filipino. Americans express themselves with more words. Filipinos usually are …show more content…
They are always spending free time with their family. Of course we all spend time with our family, but Filipinos spend time with ALL family. When I think of family, I simply think of parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, and grandparents. When I was invited to a few of Loren’s parties or “small get togethers,” her entire family would show up. She didn’t just have her parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, and grandparents. They would have deep, extended family. Sometimes she wouldn’t even know the names of her family members because being “family” was just enough. I have been her best friend for five years and I am still meeting her family. When I have a party, I usually have about fifteen people show up. Loren’s sweet sixteen party had about one hundred and twenty people, twenty being just friends from school. A vacation isn’t truly a vacation without the entire family …show more content…
It is the little differences I have noticed between our families that make our friendship interesting. My family enjoys between outside in the woods or riding four wheelers. Her family enjoys technology and spending a lot of time with each other. She has taught me a lot about her culture, and I plan to learn a lot more throughout our future years of friendship. Her family oriented ways has made me more of a family person. Because of her, I am now able to try new foods and stop being picky every time I am introduced to a new meal. I don’t think I will ever learn the Filipino language, but I have a few words memorized. Loren and I have talked about taking a trip to the Philippines. I love getting to know Loren’s family and traditions so I would love visiting the Philippines even
“Where are you from?” is a common question people ask if you look ethnically mysterious. Being a different race with unique facial features shows you are, not what they call in the United States “American”. Evelyn Alsultany was born and raised in New York City. Her ethnicity is Arab from her father's side and Cuban from her mother's side. She describes the social issue, she confronts the way people approach her creating assumptions, consequently making her feel excluded from her cultural background.
Through this great amount of time spent at the site, I have noticed many occasions where people have held conversations and sympathized with one another despite their cultural backgrounds. On the swim team alone, there are people from at least five different countries, if not more. Each individual
But sometimes they would get together and fished, played cards, and gambled. Workers would even favor cockfights and spend money at taxi-dance halls, where Filipino bands would be paid to play a song that came with a dance with a
This impacts me because without this weird connection, I would not be as close to my cousins and my aunts/uncles as I currently am. This similarity in families on both sides has made us all really close, and we see each other at least once every two weeks. It affects how I am as a cousin, and as a sister because it makes me appreciate my family a lot more, knowing how everything started. I am very grateful for this sense of connection between both of our families.
Ben, who was Sal’s classmate and boyfriend by the end of the novel, had a strange family. His mother was sick and needed to be in a psychiatric award and only family was allowed. He went to visit her even though she didn’t notice his presence. Phoebe, who’s one of Sal’s best friend, had a chaotic family. Her mother and her father were
Do you know anything about other cultures besides your own? We live in a world with numerous countries and diversities. Each country has its own appeal and positives and often times we find ourselves comparing the resemblances and differences between these nations based on a variety of aspects like geography, culture, language, economy, government, weather and so on. Ethiopia is a country with a rich historic background which comes with a variety culture. The U.S is another country with an amusing culture.
“I should be with you!” But my husband hadn’t gone on a vacation in five years; his every waking moment had been spent caring for me, taking care of my broken body, my needs, managing my illness. Because of that, I forced him to go on this trip. It took months of convincing, but he finally relented, and his sister had gone along with him.
As a child growing up in an Asian household, I quickly became aware of how different my parents’ style of teaching was when compared to my other friends in elementary school. I remember feeling very surprised to hear how lenient most of my friend’s families were. I could never dream of even asking my parents at that age if I was allowed to stay over at a friend’s house. Everything, for me, revolved around doing chores and getting good grades. It was also strange for me to see how close and warm my friends’ families were together; where there were dedicated nights for board games or nights where they would watch TV together.
The Hawaiian Islands has this image of being the perfect vacation destination for people all around the world. The island’s welcoming “aloha” culture is very popular and spoken of around the world. Yet, lately not only native Hawaiians live there, many tourists visit all year long and many families and businessmen decided to move and live there as well. This makes the island diversified and multicultural. Through the years, many waves of immigrations took place and more non-locals began living in Hawaii.
The man is in charge of the house, and he is to be followed at all the times. The women are assigned to more menial jobs like sewing, gardening, cooking, and shopping. Women were very limited with how they could spend their days. The Filipino families are dependent on the father to be the bread winner. The mother is usually expected to stay at home and take care of the children even at the expense of her career.
“When I discover who I am, I will be free.” ~Ralph Ellison With a cultural identity as unclear as her own, Sarah Howe grew up questioning the human condition, specifically regarding the idea of belonging. Yet despite her great efforts in discovering what it means to have a bicultural heritage, her journey of understanding is forever ongoing.
Our country, Malaysia is a small, tropical country that lies within South-East Asia. Although it is small, it has a number of things to boast about. And the most prominent among these things is its multiracial community. This is due to people of different races living together in harmony within the borders of this little country. This has shaped Malaysia into a melting pot of vastly different cultures and religions, creating diversity.
In relation to home, it is quite unusual in the Philippines to journey a long distance from home. Being a tight-knit Asian family we are prone to have big families with extended relatives living under one roof. We are unlike the westerners who encourage and expect independence of its members upon reaching a certain age. A number of factors page in as one leave, which includes the people involved and affected by such movement.
However, thinking carefully, I realized that I have few topics to talk not only with her, but also with my friends. After following a few steps of thinking, I realized that this was partly due to my cultural backgrounds. The process of thinking I went through is as follows. I
