Personal cultural and experience influences an individual in supporting clients and colleagues at health and social care workplace. Principles and values at the workplace include providing equal rights to each and every individual, maintaining confidentiality at the workplace, protecting the clients from any kind of abuse and harm; having own cultural beliefs and experience helps the person to make sure that it could provide better and effective services to the services users. My personal cultural and experience ensure that I serve fair and effective treatment and care to the clients. This makes it easier for me to not only manage the work process but also to protect the clients from any harm. Chambers (2010) actually suggests that this kind of experience helps to build trust among the users receiving care and hence this helps these users recover faster and better from their health issues. Developments and changes in personal values can have a great impact on the processing and focusing on work. It all depends on how these developments and changes are handled. It is important, however, to always accept these changes as well as learn new things at the workplace because this can help to refine personal skills and abilities. This can enable me to provide effective service to the clients at the work place. I have observed that some new legislation, policies, priorities, principles, values and research have been developed in health care organization. I can feel its impact on my role as a care worker. There are certain laws and legislations that can have great impact on personal values at a workplace. Data Protection Act, Equality at Work Act and so on ensure provision of fair and equal services to care users (Frontiera, et. al., 2012). In addition, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 teaches me to express same respect to both male and female co-workers. The Human Right Act 1998 helps to justify my right in government health care. Cultural understanding is the extensive logic to be cognizance, attentive and application of information and knowledge associated with ethnicity, culture, gender, or sexual coordination in clarifying and appreciative circumstances and reactions of individuals in their environment. Critical assessment on each of the patient individually is very important and cultural assumptions concerning patient 's beliefs or health practices should be avoid. Several areas should be considered when assessing cultural beliefs of patients, such as individual insight of illness and management, the social organization comprising family, communication activities, pain expression, general health care beliefs, previous experience with care, and language. Cultural practices associated with nonverbal communication in the course of conversation are very important.
According to Barry and Edgman-Levitan (2012), healthcare providers should consider their patients’ culture and beliefs most seriously (p.780). Generally, the advances within medicine and changes that involve the U.K. healthcare system place greater emphasis on patient-centred care to enhance the quality of care. Therefore, in assisting patients to assume their role, nurses should be prepared to work with patients from diverse backgrounds and promote diversity and equality. Therefore, this study helped me to gain a better understanding relating to issues about cultural diversity within a multicultural society. With dramatic changes in the healthcare system, but most importantly, in the nursing field, cultural competence is an important affiliation to the current and future nursing practice. With that, two personal strengths can come from understanding cultural competence. One strength of cultural competence seen at my facility is the potential to understand other cultures, including their values and beliefs, as well as their distinctions in medical treatments. Furthermore, the second strength is the experience acquired through the interactions between other cultures, making the nurse extra competent in the field of culture.
In this essay, two current legislations: Equality act 2010 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and their impact on health care provision are discussed. Values, skills, attitudes, importance of knowledge, ethics of professionalism and many other requirements are necessary for healthcare professionals. Cultural competence is vital in the nursing profession, one any given day the nurse is working with patients from multiple different cultures. It is crucial that the nurse give the patient cultural competent cares, which allow the patient to receive the best quality care that he or she needs. Cultural competence is defined as the “awareness and understanding of unique characteristics of a group’s social and cultural attributes, health beliefs, and values, but also encompasses interventions that reflect this awareness” (Cope, 2015, p. 305). It is vital to incorporate the beliefs and specific care of the patient’s culture into the patient’s care plan in order for the person to have the best quality care.
These cultural expectations could affect relationships with clients and co-workers in the form of their families involvement, body language, gender preferences and so on. Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
The location, cultural upbringing, and socio-economic status, can influence a person’s environment. As nurses, we must be sensible of cultural differences when providing care for patients and being aware that our perception of what is acceptable culturally for the nurse may not be culturally acceptable for the patient and vice-versa. Lastly, the healthcare environment is what we provide our client and it’s our duty to ensure the patient is concordant in that environment.

The values and ideologies that are most important to my future practice include respect for the inherent dignity and worth of persons, service to humanity and competence in professional practice. First, my value of providing respect for the inherent dignity and worth of persons is important to me and my future practice because it allows me to see the uniqueness in all my clients and subsequent cases. Moreover, it further guides me to allow my clients to be self-determined individuals.
My values One important value is adaptability. I maintain flexibility in completing tasks. Being open to change and improvements allows me to complete work assignments in a more efficient manner while offering additional benefits to my supervisors, co-workers and clients. I am able to adapt to the personality and work habits of co-workers and supervisors. Each person possesses their own set of strengths and adapting personal behaviours to accommodate others is part of what it takes to work effectively as a team.
