Pathos is a literary device that is used to evoke an emotional response from the reader or audience. The emotion can be fear, pity, sorrow, desire, etc. It is used so that the audience can connect with the book, poem, movie, etc. on an emotional level. For instance, a character in a book dying would create a sad response from the reader and would lead them to feel sorrow for the other characters that had a bond with the deceased.
