Imagine being held by bayonet point after holding out in what seems to be the longest week of your life, suddenly you hear French and you realize YOU’RE SAVED. This was the reality for our entire union during the US Revolution. This is only one example of French aid during the war, but how did French aid ultimately turn the tide of The Revolutionary War? The American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, was a pivotal moment in the history of the United States of America. It was a struggle for independence from Great Britain, and during the course of the war, the Americans received aid from various nations. One of the most significant contributions came from France, which provided military, financial, and diplomatic support to …show more content…
The French government loaned the Americans over 1 billion livres, which was a substantial sum of money at the time. This money was used to pay for supplies, equipment, and soldiers. The French also provided grants and subsidies to the Americans, which helped to keep the Continental Army afloat during difficult times. Without French financial aid, it is unlikely that the Americans would have been able to continue the war for as long as they did. France also played an important role in diplomatic efforts to end the war. The French government used its diplomatic channels to lobby other European powers to recognize American independence and to put pressure on Britain to negotiate a peace settlement. France also hosted peace talks between the Americans and the British, which eventually led to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The French also sent covert operations to Britain to spy on the war plan and the tactics used. There are two notable names that need to be mentioned whilst talking about this. One is Nicolas Sarrebourse de Pontleroy, a French soldier turned French spy. Another is Johaan Kalb, a Major General who got injured during a battle with the british. They both helped smuggle information into the states when it was most …show more content…
Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette was a French General who played a very important role in the entire revolution by pleading for guns and ships from France to help his American friends in their fight for freedom. His support helped tremendously during the war. Lafayette was given command of a battalion during the battle of Yorktown and plotted strategic positions during the war. He also enlisted his friend and founding father, Alexander Hamilton to help fight in the revolutionary war. Together they won the battle of Yorktown and the war. France helped win America's revolutionary war. Continental soldiers used French weapons, wore French uniforms, and fought alongside the French until the end of the war. The French army and navy fought the British all over the world, from Asia and Africa to the Caribbean, overwhelming British forces in America. Americans did not even participate in some of the battles of the Revolutionary War. The final battle of the war took place in 1783 when British and French ships collided off the coast of India. However, the American Revolutionary War continued long after the Revolutionary War ended. For generations since 1783, the concept of liberty and equality has influenced the French Revolution and independence movements in French colonies such as
This victory demonstrated that the colonies had a chance to defeat Great Britain which brought France to become allies with the colonies to defeat Great Britain. “On 6 February 1778 France signed with Benjamin Franklin treaties of commerce and alliance” (Adams 37). Frances military would benefit the revolution tremendously. Their navy consisted of 80 ships of
“Battle of Saratoga” agrees with this, stating that Franklin was trying to get the “French government to recognize the United States and sign an alliance, which it finally did in February 1778. ” This means that the French may have been starting to support the colonists and their war secretly before the battle even happened. “American Revolution History” supports this statement when it explains that France “had been secretly aiding the rebels since 1776.” The Battle of Saratoga was merely the catalyst that brought forth an official alliance between France and the colonists.
This set the foundation to the American Revolution. The American Revolution was the war for independence against the British. The whole basis of the Fourth of July. The French and Indian War influenced the American Revolution because it caused tariffs, loss of salutary neglect, and unwanted land delegation from the British.
There were many reasons for the colonist victory in the revolutionary war. One of the biggest reasons the colonists were victorious was that they had the French on their side. The French fought with us because they were rivals with the English. The French supplied us with Money, weapons, ammunition and troops. Most people say the Colonists would not have won the war if it was not for the French.
Saratoga was the turning point of the American Revolution because they gained allies and support from other nations that ended up helping them win the last major battle and declare independence. After the Battle of Saratoga the Americans gained French allies. Those allies helped them win the final battle. In 1780, French warships in Rhode Island were filled with thousands of French soldiers that were commanded by Comte de Rochambeau. Rochambeau ended up joining General Washington and they both waited for the arrival of the second French ship.
Open support also gained America more weapons, troops, and surplus, allowing them to push the British out of their land fully. With the British out of their land, the Americans focused more on their internal problems, their
How The American Colonists Won the Revolution April fifteenth, 1775 was the beginning of a war that would reshape politics for ages to come. A war that truly defines America as a strong and able country that could sustain itself without the assistance from what was then the strongest empire in the world; the British. Eight years it took, to define America as a place of its own, but that was not without trying, there were several main factors that made it possible for the early American colonies to win the war: assistance from the French, the residual debt the British had from the Seven Year War, and American morale for the war was much higher than the British forces. These three factors were extraordinarily important when it came to America
The French involvement played a crucial role in America winning the revolution, with the French joining the fight with them they gained man power, resources, and the strength with both of them combined to beat the
With over 24,000 men dead, Americans will need to make The Treaty of Paris to get the war to end. This war is mainly between the United States and Great Britain, although both sides will soon make allies like France and the Netherlands. The ultimate goal is to gain political freedom from Great Britain. Americans declared their independence from Great Britain
The French and Indian War marked a major turning point in American relations with Britain, with changes such as increased British control and anti-British beliefs, but also continuities such as a loyalty to Britain. The war eventually led to the elimination of the French property in America and the heavy taxation of colonists by the British. At the end of the war, the French ceded all of its land in North America east of the Mississippi River to Britain. This meant that Britain had practically completed their control over North America (the French kept two islands). This was a major change for the British-American relations as it allowed Britain to tighten its control over the colonies.
In the Revolutionary War the French played a big part in America's success. As shown in The Patriot there is only one French man that helps the entire continental army until the final battle in yorktown which ends the war by forcing the british to surrender. The French were greatly motivated to support America in the war because they had lost numerous amounts of their territories to the British in the French and Indian War. While the French fleet did block off the British from the sea, their role in this movie is twisted due to the lack of support shown on their account. France was america's greatest supporter and the inaccuracy in The Patriot did not display that at
The American Revolution brought independence to slaves, colonists, Native Americans, and women. The Revolutionary War made the United States and France allies go against Great Britain. France made a choice to assist the United States military until they received independence from Great Britain. The Revolution had a huge part in slavery, such as bringing conflict between slavery and liberty because the North prohibited slavery. The South did not believe that slavery should be abolished.
The French and Indian War was important to the American Revolution because the debt from the war was the reason that Parliament started taxing the colonists. Also, the French and Indian War made Britain very weak, making the colonists’ actions work a whole lot better. Since France was not happy with the outcome of their war with Britain this was a main reasons for France’s interest in helping the now Americans throughout the Revolutionary War, which was very important to the colonies’ victory. The reason why Britain started to tax the colonists was because of the debt resulting from the French and Indian War. The first tax was the the tax on sugar, which was put on the colonists to help pay off the war debt.
King Louis expected the United States to make France its primary trading partner, which did not happen. Soon after hostilities had ended Britain became the United States’ main trading partner. Due to this, the debts measured by France accumulated. This put France into a large pit of debt. There was no way to get out of it without angering the residents of France.
Political, economic, military, and social factors were taken into account during the revolution. These aspects of the war all played a significant role in the outcome of the American Revolution. Since Great Britain was in a tremendous amount of debt, it started social and economic issues with the colonies. The French and Indian War (Seven Years War), fought between the British and the French over the Ohio River Valley was a huge contributing factor to said debt.
