In the short story "Joe's Reward", Horatio Alger Jr. tells a story about a man named Joe, who is a mythical hero. Joe is proven to be a mythical hero because of how humble and selfless he is. Joe was rowing a boat with four ladies inside. One woman fell over the side of the boat. Joe went to save her. Joe and the other ladies talked about how brave he was to save her. The first thing in Joe's mind was," I saw she was caught, and that's why I went over after her," This quote explains how humble Joe really is. It shows that Joe immediately saves Mabel and worries about everyone but himself. Afterward, Joe and Mr. Mallison discuss Joe's payment but Joe tells him," Thank you very much Mr. Mallison, but I don't want any reward." This statement
