Sororities came into existence in 1851 while being called women’s fraternities, and it was not until 1882 that they were known as sororities. They have swept across America, with almost every university having some form of Greek life as a part of the campus experience. Each year, during sorority recruitment, tens of thousands of incoming first-year students or transfers base a portion of their first semester on whether they want to join a sorority and which one they would select. This process can cause extreme amounts of stress and unease, but most do not realize the long-term positive effects of joining a sorority in general. Although there are many misconceptions surrounding sorority life and its benefits for its members, the verifiable …show more content…
These are the lifelong connections that come from joining a sorority that explains how it can positively affect the ideas and opinions of those going through sorority recruitment or even current members. The rituals that sororities perform with each other allow for the women to grow close bonds that one could not get when not affiliated with a sorority. These opinions are directly showcased in Farrington’s article after she interviewed a woman who said, “It makes me more confident in who I am. I’ve always knows I can do things, but knowing I have 60 other women supporting me is great” (Farrington, 8). This real-life statistic shows how influential being in a sorority can be even after someone is not necessarily seeing their fellow members all the time. For business connections and job opportunities, many members in someone’s sorority know a person in a position of work they are interested in and who would be beneficial to know to obtain that particular position. There are also instances where some employers will recognize that a potential employee is in the same sorority or fraternity, which could potentially give them an advantage. These advantages do not apply to all job opportunities, but being in a sorority has clear benefits for connections with people through friendships and …show more content…
Any philanthropic service that one can do, not just through a sorority, significantly benefits someone’s personal and communal life. Being in a sorority, however, gives someone even more opportunities to give back to the community and be able to do it consistently. Although most sororities and fraternities require their members to participate in community service, almost all members continue doing this philanthropic work and benefit from it in many ways. These certain benefits could be connecting with one’s community, growing social skills through communicating with members of the community and getting a different aspect of one’s community that could have them react positively to change it. In research on how philanthropy events affect members of a sorority or fraternity, Long says, “The researchers found that service involvement was positively associated with fraternity/sorority membership, being female, and academic performance” (Long, 18). Not only does community service positively affect memberships but also being a female, while most sororities are closely related to women’s
In contrast, the rhetorical strategies used by Lisa Byers displays a nice phenomenon about Fraternities, the credibility of this writer was respected due to the interviewing of many of the fraternity members to know why they are doing this. According to the article that shows how frats are trying to help the local community, one of the member says “As a fraternity and an organization on campus it is part of our ideals and founding beliefs that we should be helping the community,” said Allegheny sophomore John Kauffman, a member of Phi Kappa Psi. This proves that not all fraternities are bad for the community and this perspective is showing that some members care about the development and improvement of their university even though many people
The integrity of Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority, Incorporated is to be upheld by Active Members, Alumnae members, Associate members, current potential new members and former potential new members. If Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority, Incorporated’s practices are learned by those who aren’t a part of it, it will be subjected to scrutiny and ridicule. People who are not a part of Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority, Incorporated do not understand the meaning behind each act and might condemn it. The sorority also then falls victim to any other organizations who might possibly try to slow down, or even worse, shut down Alpha Phi Gamma Sorority, Incorporated’s rush, process and Sisterhood. The purpose of these other organizations doing so lies within their own self- interest.
Outside of her active participation as a Kappa alumna, Betty was a teacher, served as a church organist, chaired a large antique show, owned a floral design business and led the Washington National Cathedral’s Altar Guild. As a new member of Delta Rho in 1957, Betty and the members of her new member class were always reminded of the lifelong friendships and associations they would make as collegians as well as alumnae. In the years since, Betty has found this to be very true and she is forever grateful for the lasting ideals afforded her because of her Kappa
Bad education performance can be the cause of members of a Fraternity and Sorority dealing with insecurity, self-image, and psychological issues. The process of joining the Greek life is challenging, students get specifically recruited and enter what it’s called a rush. Rush is known to be popular ritual among the organizations where members get to know each other more. Fraternities and sororities will host and promote parties and many would go through initiation process to become a member. According to “Here’s
The relationship with alumni of a national sorority chapter illustrates the external influences of alumni as constituents and integral part of an institution (Kuh & Whitt,
“People ask why I am in a sorority & I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, & obligation, or a way of life.
Through the clubs and activities I have done in the past I have gained many leadership qualities that I would like to grow further in. I believe that being in a sorority would help me do that. The socialization that comes with being
Author, Lisa Handler writes,” The construction of such friendships is not magical. It is a more or less self-conscious creation of sorority life. The experience of pledging, especially its shared stress, is intended to create solid and putatively everlasting bonds among sisters” (240). It is no secret that women have been excluded from the education system for centuries.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. offers an opportunity like no
At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.
To the women of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated: The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my interest in becoming a member of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. While growing up at a young age my mom worked out of my sibling lives. I did not have many positive female role models I could look to for guidance in different situations.
This house inhabits thousands of different personalities and each year, new ones are added. This year marks the 130 year anniversary of success at the University of Nebraska, which means there have been 130 different pledge classes and endless memories. However, Delta Gamma was not an instant success, this house stands here today thanks to George Banta, who was Delta Gamma’s only mail initiate, he was actually a member of Phi Delta Theta, he worked towards making Delta Gamma a true sorority for women, which was unheard of at the time. There were solely only fraternities on campuses around the United
Before coming to the University of South Carolina, I was on the fence about joining a sorority. Some days I was convinced because it would help me create new relationships, and other days I was completely against the idea. For some reason, I never pictured myself as belonging to a sorority. I stuck with my gut and decided not to go through the rush process to join a social sorority. When I first moved into USC, I was content with my decision.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated is comprised of several women who exhibit every value of their organization. They are virtuous and intelligent women that set the standard for every other woman to follow. They each walk with dignity and pride, yet at the same time grace. Each member of
For that reason, it is important that each chapter clearly and yet adequately incorporates their values and achievements onto their website. New members will then have an idea in their mind of their potential fit with a sorority, before even speaking with their members. Recruiting on the World Wide Web has become the new normality for recruitment in any form (Dineen, Ash, Noe, 2002). It is important sorority chapter websites incorporate their mission in an easy to read location, selling themselves to their “applicants” before even meeting
