Both stories, show their mental and physical strength. The central idea or theme of Story of Keesh and Life of Pi is survival in extreme environments.
To begin, in the text, Life of Pi, explains the harsh environment. For instance, Pi must find a way to survive in a lifeboat with a tiger. ”I watched the ship as it disappeared with burbling and belching,” and “I had not a drop to drink or a bite to eat or a minute of sleep in three days,” this quote explains what Pi is going through.

Pi continues his journey by learning how to live in a small space with these animals and even training one of them. In the end Pi reveals another story with people replacing the animals that were on the lifeboat before. Pi had initially used animals which best represented the people who were really in the boat. This showed how throughout the story, since these people were put into a life threatening situation, they had revealed a more primal side. Life of Pi is accompanied with various symbols, with each
Pi’s life changing traumatic event came while aboard a ship with his family. The ship sank and all but himself and few zoo animals survived. Pi lost his family and had to survive under the worst of circumstances. He was without a great supply of food and water. Also, Pi was without a family.
The theme of survival means to live even if there are many difficult obstacles ahead you have to face such as extreme temperatures and family members dying/leaving you. In this book, Ji-Li Jiang (main character) has to live in China while Chairman Mao starts the ‘Cultural Revolution’. He changes the laws and rules which makes Ji-li’s life more difficult. Also, her dad is arrested, leaving her moderately depressed, and she doesn't have a chance to become as successful because of the new revolution (Ji-Li has a black family history). Ji-Li Jiang survived in challenging environments where there was the Red Guards and her family had to burn down pictures of “Four Old” clothing being worn.

To guarantee survival, you must be in the right state of mind no matter the situation even though it may be hard, and you may also have to make tough decisions along the way. In Night by Elie Wiesel, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and “The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami, all three main characters had to make tough decisions to be able to save themselves. For example, In Life of Pi, Pi had to make the decision to stop trying to save his family and save himself, In Night, Elie had made the decision to evacuate camp with everyone else rather than staying in the infirmary. In “The Seventh Man '', the seventh man tried to call out to his best friend K. but he didn’t hear him, so he didn’t even realize he did it
In the Life of Pi the environment was raining and my evidence is only rain, marauding waves of black ocean and the flotsam of tragedy. The similarities are is that they 're both really dangerous environment because Keesh has to wrestle with a bear and Pi has to be on the boat when it’s really wavy and raining a lot and a tiger was still their. The differences are Keesh has people that can help him and Pi doesn’t have anyone to help him. As a result Keesh’s environment is a habitat with polar bears is dangerous and the evidence that supports this is Keesh fought a mother polar bear with two cubs without any weapons.
Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
This quote from Life of Pi in chapter 24 I believe is an example of a literary device called foreshadowing. In this quote spoken by Pi, it is able to describe the events to come in the novel. It deals with the truth and his imagination. However it is up to the reader to decide what is truly certain and what is made up from his imagination. It is important to the novel because it relates to religion where the whole theme of the novel is focused on.

In order to survive a tough situation, it is essential to be physically and mentally fit. “The Story of Keesh” by Jack London takes place on the rim of the polar sea and, at the time the village men had to hunt for food in order to keep the villagers alive. The protagonist, Keesh is the son of a great huntsman and at only thirteen he was bright, healthy, and strong. And, in the excerpt from Life of Pi by Yann Martel the main character Piscine Patel, known as Pi, is stranded in the middle of the ocean with a Bengal tiger. In the story, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the main character, Pi, is changed as a person after he must kill a flying fish in order to survive. Through this, Pi’s religious morals changed as well as his personality overall. When Pi first tries to kill the fish he continues to hesitate, and has a hard time committing the action to take the life away. As stated in an excerpt, “Several times I started bringing the hatchet down, but I couldn’t complete the action… A lifetime of peaceful vegetarianism stood between me and the willful beheading of a fish” (Martel 87).
