In the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds I believe that Uncle Mark influenced William Holloman the most. William Hollomanis 15-year-old teenager in an urban neighborhood. Will is sensitive, perceptive, and loves language, but he also desperately wants to grow up and be a man like his dad, Pop; his Uncle Mark; and his big brother, Shawn. Shawn was a huge role model to Will and on one fatal day, it happened! BANG! BANG! There was one person dead on the ground… Shawn. So, Shawn had one thing to do: he had to follow the “Rules”. There are 3 rules in the neighborhood. 1. No crying 2. No snitching and 3. The most important of them all… Seek revenge. So Will followed the rules. The reasons Uncle Mark influenced Will the most is that he shows that Will can't even say the word shoot and Will learns so much about him. …show more content…
In the novel on page 176 “Sees Riggs, pulls the gun out and… I got stuck. Couldn’t say anything else. Couldn’t say it. Hoped Uncle Mark would say, cut.” Later on page 178, “FINISH IT!, Uncle Mark demanded.” Then Will says “Okay, Okay,” Then finally “Will pulls out the gun, and… and shoots.” This is one important piece of evidence because Will can't even say the word shoots and now is expected to kill a man which might make him think about his decisions which shows Uncle Marks's influence on Will. Some people might think that Uncle Mark didn't do anything and all he did was tell a story and then the next person came. But even though it was short-lived it was still important in the impact that it resulted in. This all shows why Uncle Mark influenced Will the
This shows how Will is intelligent and can put pieces together. He realized what his mom wanted him to do without her saying it out loud. He also had an idea of what would happen to all of them if they got caught sneaking the family into the home.
An example was when Douglass got hold of a book called The Columbian Orator; he used every opportunity he could to read that book (34). He was inspired by the readings, which then made him heart broken from what he had learned. I related to Douglass when I picked out my first book on my own in middle school. The first book that made an impact on me was A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. Oh boy!
Drugs had hurt M&M so Bryon couldn’t see the good motives Mark had. Mark was trying to make money because nobody would hire him. Selling drugs was the next best thing. He believed he was a good drug dealer because he didn’t take them. He told Bryon “They’re going to get it from somebody if they wanted it, so why can’t I make some money?
Will is trying to follow these rules, but he runs into problems when people give him reasons not to. Mikey Holloman (dad) has the biggest impact with stating important things; for example, he makes Will question if he has the right person; what if someone comes for him after killing this guy? Will he be able to handle it? Mikey also uses his own experience for getting revenge for his brother’s murder; he tells Will how he was 100% sure he had the right person but ended up killing an innocent person. They
Will Shawn’s experiences and guidance help Will, or will it lead him astray? The first reason why Shawn has the biggest impact on Will is because he’s an older brother/father figure to Will. For example, a quote in the book states “ Shawn was my big brother, my best friend, my protector. He was the only one who always looked out for me, no matter what” (Reynolds, 21).
Will then knew it was ok to break them because Shawn was not only Will’s older brother, but he was also his father figure. He was Will’s mentor and took him under his wing. Shawn starts to cry which is breaking rule #1. “Rule 1 No Crying”(Reynolds 31). This evidence supports my argument because it talks about how Shawn broke the unspoken rules and that it is okay to break them.
Will at the start of the story wanted to find a sense of belonging but doubted that he could find it. For example, when Charles asked him to join the basketball team he denied him at first saying “I 'm not good enough to play” Harleen
One day, she got killed by a nearby shootout while they were playing, which ultimately altered Will's entire childhood and life. It impelled Shawn to teach him about the "rules "and adulthood because his childhood was already beginning to collapse on itself. The reason is that he just witnessed his best friend dying in front of him and described it as, "Her eyes wide, / the brightness dimming. / Her mouth, open.
Mikey’s appearance had the most impact on Will because he demonstrates the complex nature of revenge which applies to Will’s current
That's when we realize that Will isn't actually talking to these people he shows this by saying” buck thought you were dead”, or “my pop died from a broken heart”. The time is symbolizing that all
Ever sense Will was a child he he looked up to Will, “When we were kids I would follow Shawn around the apartment” (289). When little children look up to someone theu often follow them arround and copy them. Which is what Wil lwas doing with Shawn at the time. Which shows Shawn has the biggest impact on Will. Shawn could do a few tricks that Will and his friends thought were cool, “Shawn could so both so he was the king around here to me and tony and all our friends”(54).
Will’s father then tells Will that he finds out the person he shot wasn’t the person that killed Uncle Mark, but just some guy that acted all tough. He shot the wrong person, which might also explain why he felt extremely guilty after killing Gee. As a result, Will states “staring at my father who/wasn't my father at all./At least not like I had imagined him./A man who moved with precision,/patience, purpose,/not no willy-nilly/buck-bucking off/at randoms/at random./Spent my whole damn life/missing a misser./That disappointed
One big way to improve Will’s communication is to deal with the relationship violence that occurred to him. Sean started this for him in the scene where he tried to get Will to see that his upbringing was not his fault. This was a big step for Will to understand himself and how he should see his relationships. Through Sean, Will also learned some emotional understanding of himself. Emotional understanding will allow him to have emotional competence.
During the film Will demonstrates anger as well as irritability in a short tempered manner. In a particular scene, Will becomes overwhelmed with anger after encountering an old classmate who bullied him in preschool. Such anger and irritability caused Will’s mind to become blocked during the violent act in which Will also assaults an office. The incident ultimately leads Will unraveling the root of the
