When people go into a profession knowing the expectations and morals of the job, they shouldn’t have to be versed that the rules have changed. Teachers are one of the most important roles played in our society. They show the future adults of the world how to be a morally good person. But now new purpose is being put on them, physically protecting the students. Though there have been seventeen school shootings since the beginning of 2018, arming teachers wouldn't make the situation better. Many NRA supporters promote under the banner of fear, the need to arm the teachers and to protect the students. Despite the controversial idea of arming teachers, the answer is clear. Arming teachers with guns are not the way to go about addressing school shootings. If this were to happen, it would …show more content…
It could even also put others at risk. Teachers should not be armed because their job is to enlighten and teach but shouldn’t have to feel they have to take a bullet their students.
Teachers go into teaching guiding children to develop skills and to think critically to be successful later in life. They get to shape our future world by showing the children how to be role models and how to be ethical. The first reasoning that makes this a hazardous choice is that majority of teachers aren't trained in shooting a gun or even know how to pull a trigger. One reason that arming a teacher isn't a sound choice is that majority of teachers aren't trained in shooting a gun. Not all teachers are even responsible enough to carry a weapon, especially in a high-stress situation. The real responsibilities of teachers are to help students become knowable and critical thinkers. So to demand a teacher to protect with guns goes against what a teachers morals, job, and life expertise follow. Despite people knowing what the role of teachers is, some are still pushing to equip guns even though knowing the two don’t blend, especially in a school location.
Positives for arming teachers include: -Protecting against an intruder -Being first on the scene in the event of an intruder -Being an inexpensive option compared to hiring professional security -Always being present in the classroom unlike
I foresee both, advantages and disadvantages, about arming school staff members. I believe that this could be part of a solution for some smaller and rural school that cannot afford armed security or have limited access to law enforcement. I also believe that something is better than nothing because the sooner we can stop this event, the less citizens that are harmed. Law enforcement has focused heavily on advance training and preparing for these attacks since the Columbine incident in 1999. Over the past 19 years law enforcement continues to evaluate the tactics and mindset of the active shooters.
Because only few insurance companies would want to ensure armed school, it can be assumed that the prices for insurance will be significantly higher. FLASHCARD 11, continued to report how insurance companies calculate arming schools will increase rather than decrease the risk of a school being attacked. Diamond explains how teachers will be put through training regularly because the training will be lengthy in time, it will be wasteful and unproductive for teachers. With teachers spending useless time in training, they are spending less time towards participating in education or preparing for education; therefore, decreasing the quality of education received by students. With all things considered, and despite the views of those in favor of arming teachers, arming teachers will not be an efficient use of
I undoubtedly believe that teachers in Australia should not be allowed to carry guns at school. I do not believe the public should have the rights to guns in Australia, only the high and certain members of the police force and the Australian defence force should be allowed access to guns only when on active duty. Even though I don't think teachers should be allowed to have or carry firearms anywhere, I do believe everyone should be able to defend him or her selves. Teachers should be allowed to carry guns to defend and protect themselves and their students and so that they can take immediate action against oncoming threats or violence. On the other hand, teachers carrying guns could just make it more accessible to reach firearms and it could just
Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
There is a possibility that a kid who is planning a shooting could just be in a classroom and find out were his/her teacher keeps the weapon, and they wouldn 't even have to sneak a gun in. That’s a downside but what if we made gun safes that only opened with a teachers ID or own password making it almost impossible for a student to open it. Conclusion By arming teachers there are alot more positives than negatives, Yes bad things can happen with a deadly weapon in a classroom but people will continue to do these horrific crimes knowing there is hardly anything that’s going to stop them.
What a lot of people do not take into consideration is that the teachers must go through training and have to be liable to the responsibilities they are taking once they have a concealed carry weapon. Arming teachers could help lower the number of school shootings because the reaction times will be much faster, and it will add a bit of security to the children. Arming teachers will help lower the number of school shootings. If teachers are liable and are fine with carrying concealed weapons in schools, they would be able to respond to the site of the shooting much faster than it would be waiting for the police to arrive. Apart from having faster reaction times to the shooting, arming teachers will also add extra security to many students.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Teachers should carry handguns because it provides safety for the students and because it is the teacher’s right. Teachers shouldn’t carry handguns because students would fear them. Ken Corbett a clinical assistant professor reported to Arming teachers: three reasons why teachers should not carry handguns in school that, “ When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in.
Would it be effective to arm teachers in a school and is it possible it would reduce the chance of a school shooting such as Columbine? Arming a teacher may increase the response time for an emergency in a rural school district and would be able to provide safety. Although it can provide safety, it may be still possible that allowing teachers to hold a weapon in school grounds will also cause many risks and be very dangerous to the students or faculty in a school. In an arming teachers program, the teacher will go through 35 hours of training and will be able to maintain five classroom hours a day to gain the knowledge of holding a weapon and be certified. A teacher will be selected and unknown to others in a school district to maintain safety to their identity and safety to the students in the classroom.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. They could become the target of a school shooter and put students at risk for them coming into their classroom. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, is saying no to arming
I agree with this policy because many shooters give out many signs before they actually perform their act. I believe they should not arm teachers with guns because then what is the difference between a teacher and the law enforcement. I think they should make sure that every classroom door is locked when it is shut, and it should be required for the door to be shut through the class period. Also, instead of giving teachers guns I think they should mount a fire extinguisher under their desk. This gives the teacher something to spray at the shooter and possibly hit them on top the head with it.
Unlike professional shooters, teachers must undergo a series of training in order to obtain a gun. Without the proper protection and training, which was not included in the resolution, would guarantee that the weapons would fall under the wrong hands of the students. Everytown Research states, “Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.” The resolution states that all teachers would be armed, but, if the teachers were to be armed, the teachers would traumatize the students mentally away from them. Hamby, a research professor in the department of education states, “ ...the links between exposure to weapons violence and negative outcomes of trauma in kids (including depression, anxiety and aggression).
As previously stated, not everyone in the United States wants to completely disappear the second amendment of the constitution. As we know that Texas is one of the states that is on favor of gun rights, and is less likely to get strict gun control laws. Teachers in elementary schools have the opportunity to share the importance of safety against any attacks to their elementary schools to young students. Parents have also the opportunity to approve for teachers to teach about these topics. If parents continue to ask for these teachings to help their children realize the importance of these safety educational topics, districts of these elementary schools will begging to hear the controversy, so will the government eventually.
There negatives for teachers having guns at school include: students getting the gun, extensive training for the teachers - which would cost money, students frightened to learn, and what would happen if the approved teacher with the gun is not there. There should be no need for teachers to
