Gun Control: Armed Teachers
Should teachers be permitted by law to carry a lethal firearm on them in/during school? Well, Let’s look into the logistics of this matter. According to www.snopes.com, there have been a total of 17 school shootings just in the year 2018 alone. That rounds out to around a school shooting every two-three weeks. If teachers were, perhaps, armed in these shootings, could the shooters have been stopped, before they even shot their guns. Teachers in schools across America would be better fitted to take down a shooter in action, if these said teachers are armed. Now, let’s dive into three different reasons and sources on why these teachers should, and need to be armed. The average police response time in the United States is ten minutes, according to www.creditdonkey.com. To people and civilians in distress during a school shooting, these ten minutes could mean more lives taken.

One of the disadvantages would be the risk ran if a student got hold of a gun that a teacher was supposed to have in a secured spot or location. According to www.debate.org, they say, “ if the teachers keep it somewhere easily accessible, a student could take it and shoot up the school.” This is very true, sometimes kids aren’t as dependable or trustworthy as adults think they are. It only takes one unstable kid to kill tens of hundreds of his/her classmates. Also, according to www.debate.org, they said, “What if children are too scared to go to school, because of guns?” Well, there's no telling how students will truly react to guns at school, until it is tried. But, this point is true. Kids may not feel safe knowing that teachers are armed, and they may feel like one of the teachers has it out for them, or that they do not trust the teachers to have guns around them. This would decrease the amount of children in school and cause a serious loss in learning in children. Finally, let’s
Positives for arming teachers include: -Protecting against an intruder -Being first on the scene in the event of an intruder -Being an inexpensive option compared to hiring professional security -Always being present in the classroom unlike
Teachers having protection Did you know there was 52 school shootings in the United States just this year. Many could have been prevented simply by allowing teachers to carry an armed weapon, while they are on school grounds. Yes, they would be some important issues to discuss, but it would make students, school staff members and even parents feel safer while they are on school ground. Why should we allow students and teachers be in danger everyday while they go to there jobs and to school, Once a teacher gets their teaching degree, they would be required to take a hands on weapon training, allowing them to be able to carry a weapon in a safe manner at all times. At this training they will learn, how to properly shoot a gun,
Another argument deals with children confiscating the gun. If a student finds the gun they have the potential to start their own shooting and might take it home with them, putting himself or herself and others at risk. Russ Moore (2014), a licensed gun owner and the school principal of Shaker Junior High School, claims that guns could be retrieved by students and used inappropriately: “Don’t think for a minute that a secured gun, secured in a school, would be inaccessible” (para. 9). Moore continues by declaring that the gun has to be reachable by teachers and administrators in order to be used in defense (para. 9). Furthermore, guns located nearby in a classroom or certain accessible areas are easily discovered.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
Imagine drawing on a desk and being cuffed by an officer. Would you want to go back to a school like that? While some teachers might say they feel safer with armed guards in the building, it turns out that kids feel less safe knowing that a guard is in the building. This is affecting grades and bringing children's nerves to an all-time high. These teachers speak for their kids and it is not helping them adjust to having a gun on school grounds.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
School shootings are becoming a massive deal now and President Trump insists that arming all teachers with guns will protect the students and prevent school shootings from happening. “But if he had a firearm, he wouldn’t have had to run, he would have shot and that would have been the end of it.”, said Trump. Having a gun during that moment would’ve saved numerous lives in the Florida incident. Parents and students are terrified of having to be going to schools where any incident like the previous school shooting in Florida can happen. A father whose daughter was shot 7 times and died in the Florida school shooting incident could not repress his emotions, Andrew Porter states, “How many schools, how many children have to get shot?
There is a possibility that a kid who is planning a shooting could just be in a classroom and find out were his/her teacher keeps the weapon, and they wouldn 't even have to sneak a gun in. That’s a downside but what if we made gun safes that only opened with a teachers ID or own password making it almost impossible for a student to open it. Conclusion By arming teachers there are alot more positives than negatives, Yes bad things can happen with a deadly weapon in a classroom but people will continue to do these horrific crimes knowing there is hardly anything that’s going to stop them.
What a lot of people do not take into consideration is that the teachers must go through training and have to be liable to the responsibilities they are taking once they have a concealed carry weapon. Arming teachers could help lower the number of school shootings because the reaction times will be much faster, and it will add a bit of security to the children. Arming teachers will help lower the number of school shootings. If teachers are liable and are fine with carrying concealed weapons in schools, they would be able to respond to the site of the shooting much faster than it would be waiting for the police to arrive. Apart from having faster reaction times to the shooting, arming teachers will also add extra security to many students.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Teachers should carry handguns because it provides safety for the students and because it is the teacher’s right. Teachers shouldn’t carry handguns because students would fear them. Ken Corbett a clinical assistant professor reported to Arming teachers: three reasons why teachers should not carry handguns in school that, “ When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in.
There are those who add to America’s gun problem, and there are those who help solve the problem. Our country has many personal weapons in public circulation, this proves to be deadly. The prospect of arming educators has been widely suggested this year after many school shootings. Arming teachers will only add to America’s gun problem.
Imagine if a horrible school tragedy occurred killing several students and teachers but it could´ve been prevented. Well sadly in America we don't have to imagine, it's our reality. Although some may argue that guns are a right and used as a form of protection, studies have shown that guns have done more harm than good. It's important for teachers, students, and school administrators to know the role they can play in helping prevent school shootings. It's important to know the risk factors and prevention as a member of modern-day society.
But, perhaps arming teachers isn’t the best, safest or only route to a better future and an end to the problem. Having higher budgets for schools to get security, metal detectors and armed policemen and women would do a whole lot more than arming teachers. What is more sacred than the lives of the future? What could be more precious than a child who has yet to see their latter years? Time is already spinning and wasting out.
Second, it is not teachers’ jobs to protect students, as they already have so many responsibilities. They are hard working at school and don’t need more stress from having more to worry about. They are other forms of protection that schools can utilize. Lastly, fear would come upon students because of the deadly firearms in their presence. These reasons most certainly show why educators should definitely not have firearms on school
There negatives for teachers having guns at school include: students getting the gun, extensive training for the teachers - which would cost money, students frightened to learn, and what would happen if the approved teacher with the gun is not there. There should be no need for teachers to
