The Education System Needs Change
The school system creates an environment where students’ academic identities are shifted to think that they aren’t allowed to make mistakes or that making mistakes is bad.
Ashley comes from a broken home, and like in Mike Rose’s “I Just Want To Be Average” she gained mentors that weren’t family. She looks towards teacher guidance and help when confused or in need of support and like in Anzaldúa's “ How to Tame a Wild Tongue “she went through many struggles on her journey to get a higher education. At an early age, she was set on wanting to get higher education, from what she viewed, she was set on wanting to have a successful future. Her major is sociology

Ashley is influenced by her family, future, and drive to obtain higher education. Therefore education is a big part of her identity. There are areas in the educational system where it isn’t as fair for others. Especially for Ashley, school isn’t accommodating to the student's personal lives, and is centered mostly on what’s in a textbook. Ashley enjoys reading but mentioned that some teachers suck the joy out of it, making it so she would only read to complete an assignment. This sort of influence is what reassures students that they don't have any power and gives teachers authority over students which creates a relationship that is unhealthy for both student and teacher. The teacher only expects the students to work as told, and students don’t enjoy the work which causes some students to disregard pursuing higher education. In the majority of cases, Teachers lack the passion to teach. For example, Rio Vista Elementry school is a school that Ashley attended, and a review left by a parent exuberates …show more content…
Ashley's first language is English and she didn’t face many problems with diverse people in school. College is a whole different ball game compared to public schools the way teachers teach and connect with students is different. In Ashley’s past schooling teachers weren’t always caring about her or her education. In School, she couldn’t sit still and did cause a little trouble in class but few teachers took the time to check up on her, instead of punishing her with detention or time out. A teacher has a great impact on students whether it's their future aspirations or giving counseling for at-home help. The problem is that most teachers take the job for a paycheck and do not inspire future generations. In short, most teachers don't have the passion to teach and that creates a negative view of students and education. For example, what I recall from my schooling experience most teachers would read off a book get, off track, and talk about their personal life, Not that it wasn’t interesting but it felt like we weren’t learning anything. There was a similar experience in rose “Parking cars
In the summary, “I just wanna be Average”, by Mike rose conveys his readers about some of his experiences throughout school. In truth, Mike Rose anything but average. In his freshman year, he got put into vocational program by accident. Even though by accident, he made the best of his situation. He then explains how his teacher resorted to verbal discipline to keep them in line.
I Just Wanna Be Average Mike Rose talked about his high school education and everything that went along with it. He starts off talking about how he was accidentally placed in vocational education due to a mix up of him and another student with the same last name. Although Rose was quite intelligent he was forced to sit in classes that were simplified and did not challenge him. Due to this fact he spent the first two years of high school paying more attention to the people around him than to his actual school work. He talks about each of his friends that shared the vocational classes with him and how they got into trouble and how they steered him in the wrong direction.
Reyes leaves his listeners focused on how the absence of love and uniqueness in the education system is deteriorating passion, tradition, self-confidence, and personality from the mindset of the future students who aren't privileged with a backbone support
Author Mike Rose recites his experiences with mediocrity in high school in his short story I Just Wanna Be Average. Rose explains a time in high school when he became content with being average. Surrounded by bad influences, he struggles to pull himself out of the mundane and into the extraordinary. With the help of a mentor, Rose begins excelling in school, creating a happier life for himself and ultimately starting the road to success he strides on today. Rose starts his story off recounting the morning bus ride.
Teachers normally know what is best for their students.. Students know a lot more than you think they do. Kids probably know more than what their parents think they know, kids are exposed to a lot of different language in high school than normal. Teenagers have internet, cell phones, ipads, and a lot more than their parents did when they were young. Young people don’t realize how good their life is now days that they have.
She describes her family as “abusive and very poor.” For her, the school became a break from her tumultuous home life, a place where she saw adults who lived their
“This is the value of the teacher, who looks at a face and says there's something behind that and I want to reach that person, I want to influence that person, I want to encourage that person, I want to enrich, I want to call out that person who is behind that face, behind that color, behind that language, behind that tradition, behind that culture. I believe you can do it. I know what was done for me” (Maya Angelou). A teacher guides the long run of the society. someone in his or her whole life learns plenty from academics, therefore it's important for academics to line an honest example for the society.
In “I Just Wanna Be Average,” Mike Rose explains the experience being part of a school system that had no prior knowledge to have educators to teach students. Rose supports his claims by describing the different situations he had to encounter with the lack of the school system, the hopelessness of the teachers and his peers, that lead those students with no support to lead them in a direction of success. Rose purpose is to point out that; all that it was needed was a teacher that cared enough to teach and to influence those students to succeed and to never hinder the student’s learning experience because anything is possible with an little of an encouragement. In the 8th paragraph in “I Just Wanna Be Average,” Rose describes what it felt like
In the article “I Just Wanna Be Average”, Mike Rose describes about the changes that occurred in his life by undertaking challenges in achieving an education. Mike Rose was a smart kid who was accidentally placed in lower division classes due to mixing of placement test results between two students with similar names. Instead of complaining about it, he deals with whatever he was offered with. Mike Rose describes his school as a "a place for those who are just not making it, a dumping ground for the disaffected. " There were times when he had to drop his level down just to be on the same level as other kids were.
One of the key reasons why that’s so is that many of their teachers are not very good themselves”(forbes.com). Leef’s point is that it’s not always the students fault when they receive a poor grade in a class, which supports my view because I can remember countless teachers that I simply can’t understand. There are multiple factors that go into a student's grade, but people seem to only see one side of the story. The education system in America is at a dangerous place at the moment. If this trend continues, the American education system is going to go crash and be taken over by other
Mike Rose shares his personal story to the public in “I just wanna be average”, as he reveals the many flaws within the educational system of a high school in an economically depressed neighborhood in Los Angeles. He effectively directs his arguments towards both educators and parents by utilizing emotional and logical appeals. By convincing the audience to fear that children placed on remedial tracks are being hindered rather than assisted, the author causes both awareness and a feeling of duty to change the way we handle teaching children. Rose presents his argument by aiding the reader through the eyes of his younger self as he retells the story of his years in high school.
" In the street, I had been the most articulate hustler out there. I commanded attention when I said something. But now, trying to write simple English, I not only wasn’t articulate, I wasn’t even functional (X 3). Schools do not simply check to see if their students are on track to graduate.
Why do we not value teachers as human beings and individuals that need to make a respectable living? Why do we also not see teaching as a respectable profession anymore? And aside from the fame and notoriety, why are teachers not socially on the same level as our fellow actors and famous athletes? According to the definition of social science, “social science tells us about the world beyond our immediate experience and can help explain how our own society works... (“What is Social Science?, n.d.”). ”
She sees that students never ask questions and dig deeper into discussions and questions to create their own beliefs and thoughts about the world around them. . Those in authority positions do not want individual thoughts that lead to actions that could threaten their learning, similar to weapons in a rebelling society. She believes that the schools advise the younger generation what to think and lecture them what the truth is, regardless of whether it isn't that. The students are expected to listen,
The diversity of student backgrounds, abilities and learning styles makes each person unique in the way he or she reacts to information. The intersection of diverse student backgrounds and active learning needs a comfortable, positive environment in which to take root. Dr. King continues by explaining, “Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” From back then to today’s society, kids are failing because they lack those morals that they need to succeed.
