This quote is pathos because it makes the reader feel shocked and changed. This quote is a metaphor. Omit the author is successful in pathos because he draws the reader in by using metaphors and emotions which then help the reader in his argument. The author uses logos in the article. the text states, “On Aug. 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18 yearold, unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed by a white police officer named Darren Wilson.” This quote is logos because it gives pure information. Also, this quote has no emotion or figurative language in it. the author uses logos again because the text states “In June 2015, a white supremacist entered Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., Charlie Guin Perrine English 9 IB 4 22 February 2023 Guin 2 and massacred a local civil rights leader and eight parishioners during bible study”. This word is pathos because the word makes you feel uncomfortable. This word is diction because the word “harassed” has a deep meaning behind it, the word makes you feel uncomfortable, vulnerable, and uneasy. Omit the author uses diction because of words such as “praise, protest, and harassed”. This proves that the author uses diction to help his argument. In summary, Newsome uses emotion and rhetorical devices to pull the reader in. She also uses figurative language to help her argument sound factual and effective. The author demonstrates this because the author states, “The anger that had been rising within me during my visit finally boiled over”. The author also uses logos in the article because the text states that “On Aug. 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18yearold, unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed by a white police officer named Darren Wilson.” The author uses figurative language in this article because in the text it states “The political establishment cannot praise the king with one breath while condemning civil disobedience in the next breath”. And finally, the author uses diction in the article, because in the text the author uses the word “praise”. Charlie Guin
The editorial also appeals to the audience’s basic value of life, equality, and justice. In the editorial the police commissioner for the city, states that, “police owned tonight.” This was after a protest in Ferguson, where police where caught using excessive force that was completely unnecessary. This appeals to unlawful justice because it was a peaceful protest that turned bad because of how the police handled the situation and treated the protesters.
For example Bush says, “Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror” to show the sadness and emotion in the situation. This is an example of pathos because it is showing shock causing sadness, when the audience hears this part they feel sad and care more from imagining what happened or what they saw. This makes people around the world want to help more because they feel bad for people injured or families that have lost loved
The author continuously relies on a series of factual events that relate to what her particular arguments are. She attempts to prove to the reader that acting because of moral authority is what brings some of the biggest changes in society today. She states, “There are as many reasons to hope as to fear a new disappointment…” (pg.899) demonstrating to the reader than a protesters’ actions will not always result in a positive outcome. The style chosen by the author suits her purpose of giving the reader a clear view on what moral authority is and how it can impact the
Pathos is used many times when James is trying to reach the reader 's emotional side. James Hamblin states “You can look back at your responses, remembering the good things and the feeling nostalgic or remembering the bad and feeling resilient” (Hamblin 3). He is telling the reader, when you look back at old messages, pictures, or notes they are going to have at one point either a memorable impact or an upsetting impact. By James saying this in his article he is using pathos by getting the reader to feel those emotions as if they were looking back at their memories right at that moment.
Pathos is the rhetorical appeal that is used to appeal to the emotions of the readers. I believe that Ms. Woolf is using pathos to creating a warning signal about how dangerous society is through this excerpt. The story opens up with, “It is nature that is the ruin of Wembley;...”, which can be interpreted in the way
Pathos emotionally connects with the reader. Outliers shows many examples, one would be the story of 12-year-old Marita living in a one-bedroom apartment with her mom. To reach her success “I wake up at five-forty-five a.m. to get a head start, I brush my teeth, shower. I get some breakfast at school, if I am running late…” (Gladwell, 264).
I’m not thinking the way I used I think. I can feel it most strongly when I’m reading.” (Carr 557). This is an effective use of pathos because it draws the reader to question whether or not their way of thinking is changing as well. Carr is trying to create this connection, so the audience feels exactly what he is feeling and is successful at doing so.
His use of vivid language in this quote sparks the usage of pathos throughout the rest of the

Pathos is when the speech appeals to the audience’s emotions. President Abraham Lincoln uses pathos is this speech to console the audience for the losses that the country has endured during the Civil War. Lincoln uses pathos to convey sadness when he says, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.” When saying this Lincoln appeals to the people’s emotions by explaining that their loved ones struggled there and he also appeals to the feeling of pride they feel for their loved ones who dedicated their lives to their cause. Another example of pathos in this speech is, “...that from these honored dead we take increased devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…”
”(58) and one of the few points Patrick henry wants his audience to view in his speech is that he's trying to grab their attention with pathos. the author uses pathos because he wants the delegates to acknowledge the problem that's happening and uses emotional profound loaded tone and language in order to convince the delegates attention.
One example of pathos used would be in paragraph 15 when DiCaprio says,” You will either be lauded by future generations, or vilified by them.” DiCaprio says this to make the global audience understand that the world cannot keep up with the pace we are going at. He is implying that we should want to be adored and cheered on for saving our world. Another example of pathos DiCaprio uses is when he says,” That is our charge now- you are the last best hope on Earth.
