As the leader of his own orchestra, pianist Jean Goldkette aspired to be the “Paul Whiteman of the West” — a reference to New York’s groundbreaking jazz popularizer. This edition of the Goldkette band included Jimmy Dorsey on alto saxophone; later groups included trombonist Tommy Dorsey, violinist Joe Venuti and trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke. Goldkette also ran a stable of other bands, and it was under his management that the Graystone became a successful dance hall. | ||
