week 6 was all about nonverbal communication and motivational interviewing, and behave change using the appreciative inquiry. The chapter in the text book introduced a bunch of new coaching strategies. The goal of motivational interviewing is to encourage “change talk” which is talking about wanting to change. Getting clients to realize they need to change will start off the who process on the right foot. Sometimes the client can become stuck when trying to positively talk about change, which means that they are dealing with some unhealthy emotions. Expressing empathy to a client who is stuck is critical in keeping the process moving forward. To properly express empathy the coach needs to make sure they aren’t being sympathetic. There are 4 steps which are make observations, not evaluations; express feelings, not thoughts; identify needs, not strategies; and make requests, not demands. By trying to practice these 4 steps, displaying empathy instead of sympathy will become easier. In the process of moving forward with change the client needs to developed discrepancies. This means that the client needs to find the differences between present behavior and their own personal goals. coaches can help clients developed these by asking open ended questions and practice reflective listening. There re four different type of reflections that a coach can display instead of showing empathy, simple. Amplified, double sides and shifted focus. It is important to keep an eye out for these kind of reflection as they might push the client backwards. Rulers are a great tool to use to evaluate someone who is in the process of changing.
