In the 1500s, there was a movement called the Reformation, which basically changed the thinking about the churches. There was a man named Martin Luther, one day he visited Rome, and what was happening there digusted him, the people of Rome were buying indulgences. The people were told that if you indulgences, then that was your get out of hell free card, meaning you didn’t have to go to purgatory or anything. Also you had to visit religious artifacts which also helped with your sins. Now that didn’t seem right to Luther, because according to the bible, the only way God could forgive was through faith.
1. The Reformation was a period where men like Martin Luther challenged the teachings and authority of the Roman Catholic Church. However, before the Reformation, the Church had to deal with problems such as the Sack of Rome. In 1527, Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, had his own troops come against the city of Rome, take the city over, and imprison Pope Clement VII. While the Church was trying to deal with outer conflicts, there was a problem that was rising from within.
During the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the countries of Europe began to develop a rift. This was caused by a movement known as the Reformation. The Reformation was jump-started by the posting of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. Luther urged for the reform of the Catholic Church and its ideas. The proponents of his reform convinced many of the common people to reconsider the foundations of their religious beliefs, as well as the structures of their communities.
An intense religious movement called, The Great Awakening, occurred in the 1730’s and 1740’s. This movement started in Colonial America, which originally came from a town named Northampton located in Massachusetts. Two preachers whose name’s are, Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield both called Northampton home. Between these two men and their belief that the only thing that could save us humans, from the eternal fires of hell, was The Lord’s mercy. This had a massive affect on the colonists of America, due to there spiritual beliefs coming to end for the past century.

The Reformation The Reformation was a religious movement whose influence rivaled that of the Renaissance. The Reformation was a religious revolution which coincided with the end of Renaissance. The Reformation was a product of Martin Luther’s criticism of the Roman Catholic Church, whose power in Europe during the 16th century was undeniably enormous. Luther’s works discredited the institution the Church had become, which led to the Roman Catholic Church being distanced from society, politics, and even religion.

But all shall live entirely in accordance with God’s precept.” He believed that if those were to follow God, their behavior and thought processes would be regulated. According to an article in the Harvard University Press and edited by Anthony Grafton, “Jesuits” The Classical Tradition, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuits and received approval from Pope Paul III by 1540. The group of Jesuits were an organized group of priests and lay brothers who spread the word of God around the world. Along with spreading the written word they also followed the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. The Jesuits main purpose was to practice and then teach the lessons of God to people who did not know about Christianity, that included Japan, China, Paraguay and North America.

During the Middle Ages, various events caused the Church to become gradually powerful and dominant as it was the only universal European institution. The fall of Rome resulted in the Rise of Christianity. As Rome ceased to be the political centre and was replaced by Milan and Nicomedia, Christianity slowly began to rise to prominence and by 325AD, Christianity was made the preferred religion of the empire. By 380, Christianity became the official religion.
