According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the defintion of transgender is; of, relating to, or being a person (as a transsexual or transvestite) who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person's sex at birth.. Everyone wants to be accepted, by themselves, family and their peers. 10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert, illustrated by Rex Ray is a work of children's literature that revolves around gender identity and acceptance. This story may open up a chance to have a discussion with children on why acceptance is important and the multiple ways that people are different. In the book 10,000 Dresses the reader is introduced to Bailey, a transgender child who is phyiscally a male but identifies as female. Everynight Bailey dreams of a staircase that is lined with 10,000 dresses. In the story you see that when Bailey wakes up she tells her mother about her dream and her mother tells her "Bailey, what are you talking about? You're a boy. Boys don't wear dresses." The next morning Bailey tells her father of her dreams and is met with the same response. When Bailey tells her older brother of the dreams she is yelled at and is threatened with violence. What it means to just be different in general. Everyone is different in their own way: from the way we talk, look, the type of things we are into or sexual orientation. This book may also help a child who is having a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that they may be transgender. It can give them someting to identify with and a way to speak wit htheir parents about how they are feeling. 10,000 Dresses can also give a child hope, hope that there are people in the world who will accept them for who they are. Hoping a child reading this story is able to relate to Bailey and it will give them some relief and help them not feel so
