When motion pictures were first introduced, homosexuality was still seen as a major taboo and same-sex relations were illegal in almost every country in the world, largely owing to the influence the five major religions held at the time. For this reason, members of the LGBT community were not depicted in early cinema, despite the fact many of those working in Hollywood at the time were rumored to be gay. Old Hollywood’s fear of even acknowledging homosexuality as a thing that existed can be seen in the 1946 movie Night and Day, a biopic covering the life of lyricist Cole Porter.
