In 100 years of solitude I think in the town of Macondo the society is somewhat equal between the men and the women, although their roles differ. I think that the time this novel was written; the men were still superior, while the women on the other hand holds the house down and the family. A few of the roles of women in this novel was for them to basically be housewives and be used for sex. Basically women didn’t have a place outside the home. The men in 100 years of solitude start out strong but slowly loses sight of what’s really important and starts to weaken and lose their strength. Different patterns occur concerning sexuality in the novel. The women in the novel who has unusual relationships like rebeca,petra, armanata, and Ursula are much more happier. The female characters in this novel reflects the Latin American women of the time period in which this novel was written. Women with all different kinds of personality. Women in this novel use sex as a power. Pilar for example. Pliar embrace sexuality in the novel. Pliar helps the guys through adulthood playing the role like a mother. Pliar sleeps with brothers, and she also sleeps with Arcadio. Pilar had a huge influence on men. Petra would also be another example. Petra had power over Areliano Segundo. Petra is basically a mistress. These two continued to mess around even after he was married. Aureliano started living with petra, and the longer they continued messing around his animals began to multiply very quickly. Petra’s sex power brought wealth. The love the two had for one another was a very strong bond. Fernanda would be another example. She married Aurealiano and took over. Fernanda was very bossy. I personally didn’t like her but you can see she had power over the Buendia
