Every hear we turn an age older but does it feel like it right off the bat? In “ELEVEN” by Sandra Cisneros, Rachel who is now eleven goes through a rough day on her birthday. Cisneros uses literacy techniques to characterize Rachel and her actions throughout the short story. This techniques are similarity, repetition and conflict. Cisneros uses similarity or connection throughout the short story.
The "Tenth Day: Tenth Story" innovates upon the form of the allegorical tale by revealing complexity throught the characters Griselda and Gualtieri. Throughout the text, Griselda seems to be seen as a loyal and patient woman, yet on the otherside she has detached emotions with herself. For example: when Gualtieri makes her believethat her children are dead, she is emotionlessand is loyal to her husbands side. Additonally, the narrator employs complex characteristcs with Gualiteri as well. The ambiguity of Gualiteri 's persona with in constant change between his subjects and his loyal wife.
The author, Sandra Cisneros, uses literary techniques in “Eleven” to characterize Rachel by using metaphors, comparisons, and repetition. In the beginning of Sandra Cisneros’s short story, she states that when a person becomes an age older they will not feel a difference. The character Rachel explains that in different situations, for example, “Like some days you might say something stupid, and [you will feel ten]” a person might feel different from their actual age. She then competes growing old to layers of an onion, rings of a tree, wooden dolls that fit inside each other because, according to her, “that’s how being eleven years old is”.
When we read a piece of literature, we can get so impressed by a story that we do not pull the valuable life lessons from the book. We can use literary theory to pull out those life lessons to use them in our daily lives. For example, when reading the Scar Boys, we see the overarching theme of how loneliness can cause us to seek validation in places we should not. Loneliness makes me feel so sad, but in a book are cool. Loneliness has a negative effect many characters in the novella called Of Mice and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The two main characters of the book are named George he is short and skinny also there's Lennie tall and strong. The setting of the book is on a ranch and nothing fancy about it. Loneliness has a negative effect on many characters in the book, like Crooks.
This conveys that an individual may experience deep feelings of sadness and depression caused by loneliness and not being listened to, thus enforcing the importance for a transition to occur in life to enable her to experience positive
The teacher, Ms. Price picks up a sweater and asks the class if anyone is missing a sweater. A student says that it's Rachel's, and the teacher gives her the sweater without even thinking. Rachel thinks and speaks in a way that is very reminiscent of an eleven year old. There is a youthful, innocent tone in her voice, especially when she says “I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven” without actually thinking about the disadvantages of being that age. Throughout the day, she references home and how she longs to go home to celebrate with her family and eat cake.

One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”

The symbolism of 11:59 being the last train to leave the station and also that when your time has come the 11:59’s whistle blows for you. When the whistle blew for Lester he knew he only had one day but instead of using it to the fullest. He wanted to be almost greedy and he wanted to live longer so he wasted his final day trying to cheat death and sitting in his chair out of fear.
Another way that loneliness shows in a character is through Candy. His dog was his best friend and after he died he could only cope with the loneliness by following Lennie and George 's dream. Another way it is shown in the book is through Curley 's wife. She tried to deal with it by flirting with other workers on the ranch because her husband does not give her attention. Sandra Cisneros does an excellent job at using literary devices to characterize Rachel in “Eleven”. By using imagery, simile, and tone we can see that Rachel is a empathetic, bashful, wise, but still naive in her own ways.
