In the story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier there are several figurative language sentences and symbols that have meaning to the overall theme of the story. "Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are. She uses an accordion to describe this because an accordion is a fun and upbeat instrument and a "broken accordion" is the complete opposite.
Sandra Cisneros the author of Eleven she uses a lot of similes, and senses to make the reader feel like they are there in the classroom with Rachel. When Rachel is explaining “when you you are growing old it’s like an onion, or like the rings in a tree, or like the little wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, one year after another”. Sandra makes more similes throughout the story but this simile is the best on because, it’s probably the more accurate one as you get older so does your body, you get taller until you stop growing, then when you get about your late 30s early 40s you start to get gray hair plus the wrinkles start to come out. She wasn’t exactly saying that, but what she was trying to say is, even when you are getting older you don’t feel that way, you still have a little five year old who wants to come out and play.

The novel, “The Book Thief”, written by Markus Zusak shows the nature of human beings and their actions during what was arguably the most catastrophic time in human history, the reign of Nazi Germany. He demonstrates the impact that words have had on the the nation, the world, and a young girl named Liesel Meminger. However, to portray this, he utilizes a narrator which can explain events in a way no other living being can- ‘Death’. Throughout the novel, Death describes the life-changing events that Liesel is forced to undergo, but he highlights how she is able to power through them and achieve an outcome so great. In the beginning of Sandra Cisneros’s short story, she states that when a person becomes an age older they will not feel a difference. The character Rachel explains that in different situations, for example, “Like some days you might say something stupid, and [you will feel ten]” a person might feel different from their actual age. She then competes growing old to layers of an onion, rings of a tree, wooden dolls that fit inside each other because, according to her, “that’s how being eleven years old is”.
Though it is a book that has been on the censored list, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a worthy novel to continue in the high school curriculum due to its accurate portrayal of the time period.
