The book Ten written by Gretchen McNeil takes place on Henry Island. The only thing on this island is a vacation home owned by Jessica, one of the teens in the story. She plans on throwing a party on the island and she invites all of her friends. But what they don’t know is that she isn’t the one who actually sent out the invites. There are ten teens in the story, Meg, Minnie, T.J., Ben, Gunner, Kumiko, Nathan, Vivian, Kenny, and Lori.
“The Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros, is an article that explains what she went through being the only girl of six boys. Sandra cisneros wanted to be a writer, but her dad only gave her the acceptance because he thought she would get married if she went to college. When Sandra gets her degree in writing, her father wasn't pleased because she still wasn't married. This made Sandra upset because her father only wanted her to get married not get her degree. Now she wants her father to recognize her as a writer.
In the book each chapter is written in a different person’s point of view. The first point of view helps understand the characters better, make a story stronger and get the reader to feel connected to the characters in some way. The author, Sandra Cisneros, uses literary techniques in “Eleven” to characterize Rachel by using metaphors, comparisons, and repetition. In the beginning of Sandra Cisneros’s short story, she states that when a person becomes an age older they will not feel a difference. The character Rachel explains that in different situations, for example, “Like some days you might say something stupid, and [you will feel ten]” a person might feel different from their actual age. She then competes growing old to layers of an onion, rings of a tree, wooden dolls that fit inside each other because, according to her, “that’s how being eleven years old is”.
In literature, writers use a variety of points of view to convey their plot; these points of view can be first person, second person, or third person. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the unnamed narrator describes he or she killing an old man. “Harrison Bergeron” is a dystopian story about Americans in the future that have handicaps in order for them to be equal. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” tells the story of a grandmother and her family taking a trip to Florida that went wrong.

In the short story “Eleven”, Sandra Cisneros manages to convey a powerful message about growing up from the perspective of an eleven year old. The story starts out with Rachel, the protagonist, who is turning eleven today. It starts out with her at school while she's in math class.

“Two Kinds” a short story out of Amy Tan’s book “The Joy Luck Club” is a representation of the pressures immigrant children face from their parents. In the story, we follow a young girl named Jing-Mei as she embarks down the road to becoming a Prodigy. Her mother believed that “you could be anything you wanted to be in America” (Tan). For Jing-Mei that meant her mother believed she could become instantly famous. “Of course, you can be a prodigy, too”, her mother told her (Tan).
The use of first-person point of view, gave a better understanding of the thoughts coming from the janitor and how he analyzed 14-A’s mental condition throughout the story and used it against her. By using that point of view, the reader is able to dig into the janitor’s reasoning for wanting to mistreat 14-A as he had done. The janitor’s point of view has no limitations due to him being the main character and his being able to speak to the elderly lady in the story.
