“You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything affects everything.” That’s a quote from Jay Asher in his novel 13 Reasons Why. 13 Reasons Why is about a high school girl named Hannah that moves to a new town and feels as if her world is falling apart. Hannah ends up killing herself and the book is the reasons why. I think that there are three main reasons as to why she killed herself. In this point in the book, Hannah was already deeply into her depression. There was an incident at the restaurant Rosie’s where Zach was trying to be kind to Hannah after Marcus tried to take advantage. Hannah, stressed out from the situation, denied Zach. Zach got upset about it, so he started taking the notes to her in class. The class was Peer Communications and in that class they had bags that they could put notes into them. Positive notes, of course. They were supposed to be used to help boost confidence of the students and make people feel better about themselves. Hannah started not getting notes, and she was confused. She didn’t understand why everyone else would get notes and she wouldn’t. Every time someone cut their hair, they got a note saying that people liked their hair cut. Hannah decided to cut her hair to see what happened and no one said anything about it. That’s when she knew something was up. She watched the class and saw Zach taking the notes from her bag. She blew up on him in front of a bunch of people in the hallway because that was her breaking point. The notes were the only encouragement she had been getting and as soon as those were gone she felt as if she had nothing
