Dystopian literature is a genre of literature that gained popularity at the turn of the century. They show possible ways the future can be. This genre has uncoincidentally become popular with adolescents and young adults. This is because dystopian creators have found it an effective way to bring up problems in the world today. Adolescents do not watch the news, and by showing problems with the media creators are able to draw their attention to the issues. I believe that dystopian literature’s popularity is going to continue to rise because of its importance. In order to learn why dystopias are important, and the lessons they teach, we must first understand what a dystopia is and the common threads in all dystopias. These societies are a mess and a disaster never seems to be too unlikely. People can see the parts of the dystopia in the society of today, and that is exactly what the creators have intended to do. In each dystopia, a lesson from the creator can be found. For every dystopia, this is going to be different, but we will look at two popular dystopias “15 Million Merits” and “Harrison Bergeron”. The two works have common themes that are often seen in dystopias. “15 Million Merits” has many important lessons for viewers. In this dystopian society, technology has become an integral factor of everyday life. Everywhere the people of this society go they are surrounded by screens. The people of this society struggle to communicate with others verbally, are often found sending messages When they are faced with a situation where they are forced to verbally communicate they do not know how to.
