Not everybody followed the 18th amendment, because many people still wanted to drink alcohol. People were able to get around the amendment easily; one example is speakeasies. Speakeasies were establishments that sold illegal alcohol and liquor. Another example of how people disobeyed the 18th amendment was organized crime. “Whether smuggled from Canada, homemade, or redistilled from industrial alcohol, liquor commanded high prices on the black market. Gangsters like Al Capone and George Remus provided alcohol,” (Lisa Anderson). In making this remark Lisa Anderson believes the 18th amendment caused more of a negative impact than a positive one. There was also a loophole that existed was that the amendment did not prohibit the drinking of alcohol
