1920’s: Age of Innovation The 1920s were an age of innovation and improvement of modern technology. Many important every-day items were a result of this age of innovation and made the life of ordinary people simpler and more interesting. Some key innovations and inventions that came around in the 1920s were the Ford Model T, electrical conveniences and household appliances such as the radio, and the renovated Airplane. The one thing every electronic convenience had in common was that they were designed to make life easier. One of the more popular conveniences that were innovated in the 20s and were made more public was the radio. Radios were a common form of entertainment for average people. Families would gather around one radio at times and just listen to the broadcast. The Radio provided people with the comfort of not leaving their homes to listen to their favorite music and being informed of trending news. The radio was fairly pricey with a starting price of $75 in the 20’s but people were willing to spend their money on this magnificent item because of the simplicity it provided. In 1920, the first commercial radio station went on the air on November 2. The radio station was called KDKA and the first broadcast reported about the presidential election of Harding and Cox. KDKA influenced others to operate their own stations. By 1921, there were eight radio stations operating in the United States. Radios were a very significant part of the 1920s but weren’t the only convenience people had access to. Other electrical conveniences that were available were: phonographs, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, and the fridge. All of these appliances listed soon became necessities in every household in the 1920s and made everything simpler and took innovation of electrical conveniences and household appliances to a completely new and improved level.
