This era introduced new music, cultures, and inventions. This period of time focused a lot on prohibition, social changes, the stock market crash, The Great Depression, and a high unemployment rate. In the 1920s, people were spending their money, prohibition started, and the arts became popular. By the 1930s, the stock market crashed, farmers started losing farms, and the Dust Bowl began. The prohibition era began with the 18th amendment which banned the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol when it was ratified. As they moved towards the North, they brought their culture with them, they would express themselves through their music and art. Arts and culture were very popular in the 1920s. There was a silent film era, which were silent movies that provided cheap entertainment and overcame language barriers. Along with this, radios helped unify the nation and spread new ideas as hundreds of radio stations showed up over the next decade. Radios will play baseball games, soap operas, news, and much more. Even though people were enjoying the arts and culture, the economy was starting to weaken. Bringing us to the stock market crash of 1929. The collapse was caused by excessive production in extremely important sectors that increased. The market went down by 12%, only with Coca-Cola, Deere, and Archer-Daniels surviving the market drop. Many people went unemployed during this time and almost 400,000 farmers lost their farms as the farm income dropped 50%. Hoovervilles have fundamentally 4 walls and a roof. They had no electricity, gas, or clean water. These shacks were extremely tiny and poorly built with no bathrooms and had very bad sanitary issues. By order of the Parks Department, raiders raided the Hoovervilles but felt immediate regret. Hoover made the Hoovervilles since everyone said he felt he was the reason that the Great Depression had started as it was on “his watch”. After 10 years of continuous strife, the economy bounced back, employment increased, and they slowly dug their way out of the depression. During this hard time in 1930, was the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was one of the most dangerous and devastating weather conditions in history. Extreme weather lasted from 1930-1939 and was caused by: high temperatures and extreme drought, high winds, aggressive and poor farming, and much more. Farmers were especially hit hard by these conditions. Many farmers still tried to produce crops, but if they did, they had multiple issues.
