Progression from 1950 to the Present
American society has always been evolving. This can be seen exponentially in the era of the 1950s compared to the current era. Music, gender roles, and the advancement of science are the major issues that have progressed throughout the years.
Music is always changing and bouncing off of different genres even now. In today’s time, musicians use the backing tracks of past and other songs already produced to make their products. Back then, Elvis became an icon because he combined race music, which was music mostly listened to by the black community, with a mixture of white country music. The way that people listen to music has changed as well. Many people used to listen to music using records on a record player. Now we can just pull out our phones and go to Spotify and music apps such as that.
Gender roles, gender roles are always an impactful matter that has changed. It is a huge thing because it impacts everyone in society whether they like it or not. During the 1950s, gender roles were known as “stereotypical”, which they are compared to now. According to Life magazine in 1956, “The ideal modern woman married, cooked and cared for her family, and kept herself busy by joining the local PTA and leading a troop of Campfire Girls. Some things that happened to show this was, In 1952 was the first Hydrogen Bomb Test, in 1953, DNA Structure was discovered, in 1954 was Salk Vaccine tested for Polio, in 1958 NASA was created, etc. These are just a few things that happened in science that demonstrated that science was progressing and advancing from what it used to be and is still expanding today. For NASA, the latest project that they had been working on was the Artemis mission, which is where they landed the first woman and first person of color on the Moon by using innovative technologies to explore more of the moon’s surface than before. The mission happened on November 16, 2022. Even now, we just got out of a worldwide pandemic, which was COVID-19. The vaccine for this appeared on December 15, 2020, for the first time, but wasn’t available in the United States until August 23, 2021. It also depended on the age group and the necessity for certain people to get the vaccine first.
