Elvis Presley and American Culture Elvis Presley revolutionized rock music and American culture with his unique style and creative music. Through his music, Elvis was able to help break the racial barriers that were happening during his time period. He was also able to introduce his white listeners to African American music and his black listeners to Jazz music. Elvis was also able to have a strong influence on the youth of America, especially the teenagers. Teenagers were able to go against their parents and changer their appearances to try and be like Elvis. Elvis had a huge impact on the fashion of America. His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, died at birth and was buried in an unmarked grave in a local cemetery. Elvis said in later years that, “He always felt like he was missing something.” Elvis was very close to his mother, Gladys Presley, when he was growing up. His father, Vernon Presley, had a variety of jobs but none of them were successful and he even served time in jail for check forgery. The Presley family was poor and moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. Even in his early years, Elvis demonstrated a talent for singing in church. Elvis was shy and quiet when he was growing up. Elvis Presley also remains to be one of the most successful individual music artists ever. Elvis has more than two hundred and eleven million certified units sold worldwide. Various successful Elvis Presley albums, including compilations and collections continue to be released. After Elvis’s death, Graceland became a huge tourist attraction. Elvis was the most visible and influential figure in rock and roll. The influence that Elvis had on American culture was never seen before by a musician. His influence can be seen even after his unfortunate death in August of 1977. Elvis is still having a huge impact on music today and his music can still be heard in America. There are even Elvis impersonators that still put on concerts to keep his legacy
