1984 was written in 1949 by George Orwell. The book is about his vision of what the future may be like. The main character in the book is Winston Smith. Other characters in the book are Big Brother, O'Brien, Julia, Emmanuel Goldstein, and Mr. Charrington. The setting is 1984, London, sometime in early spring. The book begins with Winston Smith, a tall man about 39 years old who has black hair, purchasing a diary that caught his eye. The book is very old and and the paper is a bit yellow. At this time to have a diary is legal, but everything you write in it can be held against you. He buys the diary at Mr. Charringtons shop, which is in a part of town that is near the train station. Big Brother is the leader of the Outer Party, which is a group like a government. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, one of the biggest building in London at the time. At a mandatory gathering at work, Winston notices a woman who he has seen before, and a guy named O'Brien, who he thinks works for the Brotherhood, the enemies of the Outer Party. The Brotherhoods leader is Emmanuel Goldstein A few days later he finds out the womans name is Julia. Julia has dark hair and freckles. That day, She secretly gives Winston a note that says " I love you". Later, they rent the top floor at Mr. Charringtons shop. They decide that they will go against Big Brother. The only person they know who is against Big Brother who is O'Brien because they think that he is in the Brotherhood. It turned out to be a trap and they both get captured and put in jail at the Ministry of Love, a prison with no windows. O'Brien told Winston that if the Outer Party says two plus two is five, two plus two is five. O'Brien asks what two plus two is and Winston says four. They shock him for a few seconds. Nicholas
