A. Setting In 1984 book, the world is sliced into three regions which are the Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia. Mr. Smith -our protagonist- lived in Airstrip One, Oceania. It was the new name of London, Britannia. In these days, Oceania’s living condition was very poor. The war was constant. Nearly every day, some of the places in the city was bombed. Meanwhile, Oceania's political structure was split up to three part: the Inner Party who was ruling class, they were like the head of the Party; the Outer Party who was educated workers, they worked as the body of the Party; and the Proles or the proletariat was the working class. Every class lived in their own district. In the movie version, the movie was started in the Ministry of Trust while all workers were shouting at telescreen. The city in which Mr. Smith lived was destroyed. Nearly in all the scene, there were old and destroyed places. Greyscale was predominantly used in the film. These places and the toning feel very depressed. I think also producers of the movie wanted to feel this way. According to whether it was portrayed in the book, the screens and places in the movie were matched. Especially the Ministry of Love’s building was reflected nearly same as the book portrayed. Main power is the Party. The Big Brother’s in the other word, the Party’s power is undeniable. They control every part of things in the country. They forbid nearly all the humanly things like having sex, having belongings… However, the only power is not the Party in the book and also the movie, there is the power of the hope. Reading the book, I feel the power of the hope more intensely. In the book, especially Winston is hopeful for changing of the rulers.
