What does it mean to make someone human? Being human is what differs humans from animals. Humans walk upright, speak in different languages, and even change the world for the better or for the worse. Humans are amazing species, they are on top of the food chain as well as the superiority scale as well. Being able to govern themselves while having rights is something else that makes humans, human. Humans can take these rights away from one another. This is called dehumanization. Humans can take away other humans rights, making them feel less human and worthless. According to Winston, “But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred” (126). The Party claims that they are helping the Party members by letting them let out those pinned up emotions during the two minutes of hate. The Party members are actually dehumanizing them by not letting them express their emotions through anything else, but the two minutes of hate. Emotions are one of the many things that make us human. The Party is brainwashing them to be loyal to the Party and only the Party. They took away the right to form emotional connections, which make people human. Due to the Party taking the right of emotional connection, Party members are not able to express their feelings which leaves them with hatred and paranoia about expressing their feelings. In Oceania privacy is rare to come by, the people of Oceania are always being watched by their government. In Oceania “Freedom is slavery” (28) is one of the slogans. The Party uses this slogan to keep the people of Oceania under the Party’s control. The Party implies that Freedom is slavery, meaning, if the citizens of Oceania were to be able to have freedom, they would be putting themselves in slavery. This is how they say that they are protecting the people of Oceania. The fact is that this is actually taking away their rights to have privacy. The government takes away that right by putting up telescreens in order to watch and listen to them, so they will continue to stay loyal to the Party.
