The Will to Survive Overpowers Love, Commitment, and Trust “Survival, noun, which means the state or fact of continuing to live or exist especially in spite of difficult conditions( Merriam Webster). Survival is a very important theme in both of the books, as Marcus wants to survive and not get arrested by the DHS and Winston does not want to get caught by the Party and survive while still being with Julia. In the book 1984, by George Orwell, Winston, an Outer Party member, has troubles with the government, named the Party’s measures of controlling and surveillance on their citizens. The government watches their citizens everywhere they go. Wanting to survive has overpowered the want for love in many ways. When people understand what it means to love, or be in love, they can stop putting their own survival over the love of others.. “There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother.”( Orwell, 1984). When WInston was being tortured in the room 101, or the room of your worst fear, he was brainwashed into thinking that Big Brother is the only important thing.
