Did you know that 76% of eight to nine year olds and 91% of sixteen to seventeen year olds are on the Internet an hour or more a day (2012 Harris Poll Youth Pulse Study). Yikes! That’s a staggering amount reported in 2012. Six years later this number has grown by leaps and bounds because of smart advertising techniques. These statistics show how much advertising plays a role in the lives of youths’. Technology plays a significant role on children's’ decisions of how they spend their money. To illustrate, “the average American child today is exposed to an estimated 40,000 television commercial a year - over 100 a day (American Psychological Association). Direct marketing promotions, and sponsorships rated 80% of marketing dollars on various types of technologies (Schor). One of these retailers are 77kids by American Eagle. In the middle of Times Square there is a “Be a Rock Star” photo booth in order to engage kids into buying their clothing. To take a case in point, Schumacher estimates that “nine in ten kids tries on of the technologies in the store”. In another example, the toy company Ganz has an online game for their toy Webkinz which links Webkinz plush animals with that online game. Ganz makes money every time someone clicks on an advertisement online. In the following manner, youths pack 8.5 hours of media exposure into 6.5 hours each day seven days a week - which means that youths spend more time plugged in than they do in the classroom (Roberts).
