Rhetorical Précis In her rhetorical essay “From Fly-Girls to Bitches and Hos” (1999), Wesleyan University graduate and feminist Joan Morgan claims that if a man cannot love himself, than he is incapable of loving women in a healthy matter, and it is up to women of color and the African American community to change these threads. Morgan supports her claim using ethos by questioning artists such as B.I.G and their aggressive lyrics, with logos by providing statistics from the U.S Census Bureau in regards to the decrease of the number of black two parent household, and also with pathos by providing a personal example of her family friend. Morgan is hoping to improve the music industry by examining hip hop and rap lyrics in order to raise awareness instead of censoring the industry. These modernizations had a direct impact on the culture of the city, the lifestyles of its inhabitants, and the prominence of the city across the world. Paris’ inhabitants were as social as ever, and often enjoyed themselves at cafés and bars. This modernization acted as a perfect catalyst to support the surging wave of capitalism across Western Europe.
Within the past year, the treatment and perceptions of women have been challenged due to the various marches and movements. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s romance, The Scarlet Letter, presents how women were viewed in a Puritan society, falling into a rigid dichotomy of either being the “saint” or “sinner.” This is otherwise known as the “Madonna/Whore complex,” which is explored through the life of the novel’s protagonist, Hyster Prynne. Her struggles and experiences through this dichotomy ultimately affect her both physically and emotionally as it represses her femininity.

The feminist movement has been trying to prove to the world that women and men are created equal. During the 1960s, the civil rights movement also began, and Ken Kesey had the same opinion about both these issues as most white men. Timothy Shay Arthur’s “Ten Nights in a Bar-Room” is a novel filled with unfortunate events that change the lives of many families. It illustrates the lives of a few men, who were once proper gentlemen, but transformed into undesirable people due to intemperance. Their stories demonstrate how destructive alcohol was to their lives, not only for them, but for their families as well. One of the characters that immediately caught my attention was Joe Morgan. Joe went from being an enviable father and husband, and even Mr. Slade’s former business partner, to the town drunk and an absent father.

In “The Yellow Wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrates a controlling and dysfunctional relationship that also relates to “The Story of an Hour” where Kate Chopin also reveals a dysfunctional and unhappy marriage. When paired together, both pieces of writing portrait the other side of marriage where everything is not just a happy ending and it’s shown as incarceration and loss of freedom. Many audiences of stand up comedy enjoy hearing their favorite comedian entertain them. But what would one think when a comedian cracks a joke about a sensitive topic, for example, a tragedy that affected hundreds of people. Some may argue that, comedians are not supposed to overstep the boundary of controversial jokes. These controversial jokes are linked with political correctness—which is used to describe language, policies, and measures that are taken to avoid offense to certain groups of people. Comedians are not compelled to restrain from controversial topics due to the topic not being sugar-coated, the higher level of contemplation that the joke can reach, and the job of the comedian—to make the current issue manageable.
