Caesar Augustus was and still is titled as "the greatest emperor of Rome to ever live." He lived from 63 BC to 14 AD. In 27 BC, the Senate gave him the name Augustus, which means divine, and that's where his title originated from. There are countless things he has done that prove how he was and still can be called the greatest ruler of all time. He was the first emperor of Rome; he reigned for 41 years and avenged Julius Caesar's, a.k.a. his uncle's, rule after his assassination. Augustus was also the first to create a standing army and he brought peace and prosperity amongst Rome during the chaos, after Julius's death. Instead of making himself dictator, like his late uncle had done, he a founded the principate, which is a system of monarchy headed by an emperor holding power for life. He had full control of all aspects of Rome with the help of the army to obey his every order. He was a patron to the leading poets of the time like Virgil. He also ensured his power by promoting his image through statues and coins. He's very well-known for creating a standing army for the very first time. We even have a month named after him- August. The Senate in 8 BC had voted to rename the month of Sextilis after Augustus. They did this since he had become first consul and had won his final victory over Mark Antony and his lady, Cleopatra. They had it follow July, which had been recently renamed after Julius. He did many great things for Rome such as: doubling the size of the empire, adding landmarks in Europe and the Asia Minor, and securing treaties and laws that gave him adequate rule from Britian to India. Buiding-wise, he expanded the Roman netowork of roads and he had also founded the Praetorian Guard and the Roman postal service.
