2 February 2023 The Legacy of August Around nine percent of the American population is born in August but most of them don’t know that it’s named after the great Augustus Caesar. Augustus ruled and commanded the roman empire from around 31 BC to 14 AD. He was known for establishing the Roman Empire, for bringing peace within Rome, and for his efforts to improve society. Augustus Caesar impacted the development of the Roman Empire by gaining popularity as a powerful dictator, bringing a period of Pax Romana (Roman Peace), and creating a Hellenistic Culture. However, this all had to have come from something. Another Encyclopedia states, “Octavian went before the Senate and announced that he was restoring the rule of the Roman world to the Senate and the Roman people. The Senate, in gratitude, voted him special powers and on January 16 gave him the title Augustus, signifying his superior position in the state, with the added connotation of "revered.’” (Augustus) This quote explains how Octavion, which was Augustus’s real name, had announced his great plan for Rome which was acknowledged by the people and Senate. His bravery and confidence along with his promises have grabbed the attention of the Senate so much that they in fact decided to give him special roles and even nicknamed him to show his superior power. A World History Article on Augustus says, “This time his subject is the Pax Romana, that period of relative peace and stability enjoyed by some 70 million subjects of the Roman empire, beginning with the Principate of Augustus (27 BC) and ending with the death of Marcus Aurelius (AD 180). Never before had such a broad cross-section of the world's population lived in peace over so many generations.” (Gabriel) What this is saying is that Augustus brought a remarkable moment in the history of the Roman World by bringing absolute peace which benefited the community and had lasted after his death which other leaders kept
