Hip Hop music star Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls or The Notorious B.I.G., was part of an East Coast-West Coast rapper rivalry that included Tupac Shakur and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. A year after Shakur was murdered, Notorious B.I.G. was preparing to release his second album when he was gunned down at the age of 24 as he left a party in Los Angeles. Source Frank swears that the fight between Tupac and Orlando Anderson was the cause of the rapper’s shooting later that night.
Notorious BIG was, in fact, the king of the East Coast and with his major appearance on the rap scene, inevitably created a rivalry between East coast and West coast hip-hop factions (“Notorious B.I.G” 1999). This feud was further fueled on November 30, 1994, when Shakur was robbed and shot four times, Biggie was accused of being involved yet there was no evidence. In retribution, the two rappers continuously exchanged disses, that eventually got too personal, including the claim that Tupac slept with Big’s Wife, singer Faith Evans (“Notorious B.I.G” 2011). Subsequently, in 1996 Tupac was shot and killed, this was the start of a war between the two factions, that neither of the sides was ready for. Many believed that Biggie and Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs were responsible for this murder, but all claims were denied.

Artists are influenced by the environments they have grown up in. Gang Starr and 2Pac had very different upbringings, which influenced their style of music. 2Pac from a young age “took to the streets, selling drugs and becoming involved in the gang culture” (Ray) and being part of the gang culture inspired him to write songs about what he has witnessed. In contrast, Gang Starr was raised in a respectable home because his father was a judge for the “Boston municipal courts, and his mother…was the co-director of library programs” (Caramanica). When growing up his dad would listen to a lot of jazz music, which influence Gang to appreciate this genre of music as well.
Today nobody has been convicted for his murder, and the case is still a mystery. Dre used music as an escape from the tensions and problems of life. He went to house parties and clubs to work the turntables with The World Class Wreckin’ Cru around Los Angeles. In 1986, the young beat maker found Ice Cube and wrote many songs for Ruthless Records, a music label started by a drug dealer known as Eazy-E. This allowed Eazy-E to form the N.W.A. an acronym for N*ggaz With Attitude, with Dre and Cube, releasing their first album in 1987, Boyz N The Hood. A year later with new management under Jerry Heller and Priority Records, N.W.A. delivered Straight Outta Compton, which became a major hit due to its hardcore lyrics and reflection on street life, especially those of "F*ck tha Police," which resulted in the FBI sending a warning note to the NWA suggesting that the group should not promote violence. In 1992, Tupac Shakur wrote a song titled “Changes” in response to injustice in black communities in America, and concerning the need for some serious changes to be made in order for life in these communities to get better. He directed this song towards black youth in an effort to persuade them to be the ones to propagate this change. The desperation, frustration, anger, and fear in this piece create a very distinct and powerful tone that proves effective in helping create rhetoric. Tupac uses his song as a vessel for a powerful piece of rhetoric. The first thing one notices when listening to this piece is the tone and diction it employs.
Tupac Amaru Shakur was an African-American rapper, poet, and record producer during the 1990’s. In his adolescent years, he attended the Baltimore School for the Arts where he took acting and dance classes, like ballet. He was taught radical politics by his mother, which helped him develop ideas about topics he would later use in his many works. At an early age, Tupac had seen the injustices of the real world. His mother was a former Black Panther activist who turned to substance abuse during Tupac’s childhood.
Later in that same year, Steinberg organized a concert. A former group of Shakur’s “Strictly Dope” performed there and got their first record deal. Tupac started recording in 1987 but his professional career did not start until the 1990’s. He debuted his rapping skills in the Digital Underground “Same Song” for the soundtrack of the film “ Nothing but Trouble”.
“Dear Mama” by Tupac is a tribute song to Tupac’s mother. The song depicts Tupac’s love for his mother and his gratitude for her work and mother ship throughout his childhood. She raised him from poverty, crack addiction, and many other circumstances brought on by the world that formed Tupac Shakur and Dear Mama. The reason I love this song because Tupac addressed his mother with brutal honesty, forgiving her for abandoning him and thanking her for raising him. “Even though you was a crack fiend, mama/ You always was a black queen, mama, “he rapped.
