Alla en Rancho Grande can be considered a Latin romantic comedy. It deals with the affairs of El Patron (Felipe), Jose Francisco, and Cruz in their classic love triangle relationship seen in many movies before. There are many additional characters that add to the “spice” of the Latin film and culture seen present. Characters like Angela (Jose’s godmother) and Florentino (Angela’s husband) contribute significantly to some of the themes seen throughout the film.
The love story portrayed in Alla en el Rancho Grande is told in a classical or linear fashion with polyphonic elements. The story starts off with the three main characters as children (Felipe, Jose, and Cruz) however, a little after 15 minutes into the film, we flash forward to them as adults. The cut between time frames is one worth mentioning, it utilizes a pan and zoom along with a dissolve cut to smoothly change times frames. In other words, Mise-en-scene is what we as viewers see on screen during the film. Two stylistic elements notable in Alla en el Rancho Grande would be the characters along with the setting as a whole, and how it tied back to the theme of Mexican culture. The props, characters, and scenery were all specifically chosen to build a “ranchero” theme. Props ranging from the sombreros they wore, to Spanish guitars, and even ponchos added to the film’s Mexican origins. However, there was one prop, which served as a motif and kept reappearing, cerveza, better known to us as: beer. Mexican culture, predominantly males, is known for heavy drinking. Whether it be to celebrate a wedding, mourn a loss, or even just share time with others, it can be guaranteed that alcohol will be involved.
